I have an '87 Monte SS, with a CZF trans. I was doing some open-road racing at high speeds, and it sent fluid out of the vent tube. I trailered it home, and had the shop that built it check it out. I found a deformed govenor spring in the pan, along with several pieces of black plastic from the thrust washer. The sun gear, low roller clutch, race, and low/reverse clutch housing were all damaged. I was surprised since this trans only had 7500 miles, and 10 months on it. He even rebuilt it to WE4's specs too. He said it was caused by neutral drops only. I have NEVER done a neutral drop (really). Anyone else have any ideas about this damage? This shop did a "standard" rebuild on this many, many years ago, and it lasted several years with 10 times the abuse. It was "barely worn" when he redid it just last year.

improper internal operating clearances are almost always responsible for thrust washer breakage.as far as the neutral drop" mythistorima ",human beings have a tendancy to fabricate causes of failures due to a lack of understanding in the "principles of operation " department.tell them to buy our new 2004r overhaul and modifications manual before they attempt to rebuild it again.ckperformance.com
