I'm in the process of cleaning up my engine bay and I noticed the little rubber boot on the steering knuckle thingy is leaking oily goo.

I would like to replace the steering shaft but I'm not sure what it's called or where to get one.

Any advice?

Installed an aftermarket stock replacement. Not very good. It clicks when it turns because it's sloppy where it telescopes.

Installed the Hooker steering shaft and that's a nice piece. Much better, smooth & tight.

in past post i put up link to gbody repop
recently had a car in with sloppy steering , all slop was in the reproduction intermediate shaft (not sure of source but doubt there would be any difference nomatter the supplier
..its a piece of shit (not cleaning up the wording ..it sucks )
sloppy at steering column due to poor stamping and loose at the box end slipping splines (clicking when turned)
tried over torqueing bolts using oe bolts still no good
replaced with a reclocked astro shaft (basically its ujointed like the hooker but dirt cheap and you need to clock the end 90degrees ), slop is gone

looking at the hooker ends the way they stay on with grub screws i would not use that in a DOT on the road vehicle , the astro engagement to the box is just like oe and the end at steering needs just a small notch but was acceptable for factory build but can be drilled for a through bolt to prevent slip off

The set screws seemed hokey to me too. But as I recall, there was a thru-bolt as well, and the set screws were multiple with loctite and jam nuts. Have been running it now for about a year or so, no complaints.

Hmm....
this is the version i was looking at:

I guess a guy could go through the steering box shaft and nut a longer bolt on the other side.

I reckon the splines are enough to keep it from walking
