I am new to modifying the turbo buick motor...or any turbo motor. I have a FAST ecu, larger turbo (stock appearing three bolt from Precision) 3" down pipe utilizing stock elbow/puck setup, larger injectors (36lb), K&N filter, no cat, ATR dual exhaust...and that is pretty much it.

What is happening is I will make two or three good clean runs, running 17psi of boost, no problems...and then the next time while the turbo is building boost the wastegate will dump without any warning. I notice the problem is worse when the trans kicks down and the rpm is over 4000 rpm.

I guess I don't know if I have a mechanical problem with wastegate or if I have a major flaw in my tuneup that doesn't show in the datalogs I have....any ideas would be a help, I want to get this squared away before intercooler, torque converter, etc.

Thanks, John

I HATE this new modern "lingo"!!!!

What exactly do you mean by: "then the next time while the turbo is building boost the wastegate will dump without any warning" ???

Put it in terms us "old" turbo guys can understand. ;)

If you have an aftermarket turbo and the stock elbow then the puck on the elbow may be too small to cover the hole in the new turbo or may be misaligned....

ks:cool:

Thanks to both of you, Turbodave, I mean the boost drops/wastegate opens and blows the boost, engine falls on it's face, goes very rich, then will recover and run fine for another run or two....the only time I can remember the wastegate opening in "stock" condition is when the motor was accidentally over-revved in a low gear.

Would going to an aftermarket downpipe (with integral wastgate puck) give me more control over the wastegate? I will check the stock elbow to ensure the stock puck is still lined up..maybe I have damaged something when I was first tuning car.....

Thanks for the help
