I have surveyed 3 possible spots on the down pipe.

1. up in the engine bay at about the 2 o-clock position just forward of the A/C accumulator, so if you're standing next to the car it's pointing at you leaning outward. Too much heat here?

2. a few inches further down at about the 11 o-clock position closer to the A/C box and leaning somewhat toward the engine, but still not too badly interfering with a plug change. Too hot here?

3. Down near the bottom of the pipe about a foot from the end on the inside of the pipe pointing inward directly at the engine. Probably no heat issues there.

I have no test pipe, just a fake cat, so mounting it on the a test pipe is out of the question. Besides, at the track I like removing it and running an open downpipe.

I have what appears to be a fairly heavy duty bung, that I got out of my friend Scot W. LC1 box when I installed his. He already had a bung and didn't need it.
Question: Is it better to mount it "on" the pipe, or make the hole large enough to submerge the bung a little?

Short answer- option 3 has been used before..

I found a photo of a shop installing a bung for a WB 02 sensor in a Buick while I was looking for something else. I believe it was in an issue of GMHTP. I also think it was at Cal Hartlines shop, but I may be wrong. Anyways, I saved the photo because I liked how they did the dump on the downpipe. It basically comes straight down, right before the cat/test pipe. Just above that, you can see the guy welding on the bung for the 02. I will try to post the photo, and I can send one to you also. Hope this helps!

Looks like my photo is a little too big..I'll try to email it to you..

Dave... I have mine mounted about where your #2 choice is.. Ran it for a year with no heat sink, and recently added a piece of copper flashing as a "just in case".. never had any heat issues

Well you know where mine is located currently. I had it mounted in my THDP as far back as the welder could get it, facing sort of up in the engine compartment. When I switched to the RJC downpipe I had it welded lower, out of the engine compartment and facing the trans, just above the cat.

Both places seem to be fine, but I figured since I had the downpipe out of the car I would have the bung welded in a spot that put the O2 sensor out of the engine compartment for appearance purposes but also to reduce the heat it sees.

I think that's what I'll end up doing now that I have the downpipe out.

When you have decided where to install it, bring it & the bung over and i'll weld it up with some stainless rod. Just give me a call when your ready.

I'll do that. THANKS!!

Anybody have any thoughts on my last question:

Question: Is it better to mount it "on" the pipe, or make the hole large enough to submerge the bung a little?

Mine is mounted on the pipe down where the cat. conv. used to be. I dont have a heat sink and I have great readings with no issues. I think as long as the tip of the sensor gets into the exhaust flow you are good.

The bung on my TA headers for the ECM 02 sensor is not a flush fit bung and the 02 sensor seems to work with this also....the wideband should be the same.
