Sounds like you need to find an accurate scale. A close friend of mines SBC 72 Shovel weighed a tad less than 3800 empty. Here check out what the NHRA has it listed as NHRA Stock Car Classification Guide

Uuuhhh....I'm pretty sure the scale I used is acurate, they have to use it to weigh scrap metal haulers and military TMO moves all the time. Plus I even talked to a few other Chevelle owners with big blocks and they all told me their car weighed about the same.

If your friend's car weighs that much it must be a Malibu model in full trim, with about every accessory/option available.
