Here in CT we are seeing some real cold weather, 5-10 degrees. Snowed this morning too so I had my 96 Blazer in 4wd the whole way to work, about 10 miles or so.

Pulled into the parking lot and smelled something burning. When I popped the hood I had oil all over the top of the pass side valve cover. Looks like it was coming from the dipstick area for the trans. Looking closer I see that it is coming from another tube that is attached to the dipstick. Anyone know what that is? My hunch is that it is a vent for the transfer case? So why would fluid be spewing out of this? Too freaking cold to fix a tranny right now that's for sure. Any suggestions as to the cause of this would be appreciated.

I believe it is the breather for the Transmission I think I checked a few years ago but I'm not positive.

My 95 blazer did the same thing a few times, 3 or 4 years ago on the freeway but it was usually a hot( hi 90's) day. I never figured out why. The Tranny dipstick broke and was replaced not to long before this happened. My guess is the the dipstick wasn't the correct length and the tranny was overfilled. I haven't had the problem for several years but I don't fill the tranny to full anymore.

Next time keep it in the garage :D

My S-10 wouldn't kick over the past 2 days unless I Shoved STARTER FLUID down the throttle body carb :(

Ck your trans fluid level

The reason i say this is, there is an T/C input seal on the front of the case. The seal could be leaking causing the fluid in the trans to cross over into the T/C causing an over fill condition.

If that is not the case, Chrysler dealers sell an anti-foam agent {it's a clear liquid in a clear bottle} just for situations like this. :D

Fluid level was actually just a bit low. Haven't done a thing recently to the Blazer to change levels. It was definetly leaking out of a breather/vent type gizmo attached to the dipstick but not out the dipstick itself. Just wondering what it IS venting?

Drove home in 2wd and no more leaking so I guess it has something to do with the transfer case??
