i was wondering if a od tranny from a 86 regal with a v8 in it would be the same as a gn or ttype tranny. i dont know if they beefed them up or just used the same tranny. i would like to know because my 87 gn has 157k on the original tranny but i have a low mile one from a 86 v8 regal in my garage...if they are the same i would consider switching them...thanks

No.
Different valve body, possibly different governor, and maybe different servo.

I'm a total 200-4R neophyte, but have scrounged a lot of info from the board; To further answer your question: The internals are the same, but all the controls are different. Conceivably you could transfer all these when your GN tranny dies, but unless you are sure your spare is perfect, I wouldn't bother. It would leave you with a non GN tranny case- a negative should you decide to sell the vehicle.

GN trannys have a 4 wire harness to use two switches on VB (other cars use one switch & 3 wire- different plug, won't fit).

The following is from a compilation of posts- hope it's accurate:

High Perf Changeover
Change the Valve Body, separator plate, TV boost valves, Pressure Regulator valve & springs, governor & speedo assembly. Make sure the servo assembly is the correct size for your application, and use the proper accumulator spring(s) as well.

Now you've an idea of what you'd be looking at (and I hope I got it right).

thanks for the info...i am definitly gonna leave it for my 72 gto which was originally planned...i'll just get mine fixed if i have to or just leave it...it still goes but it has 157k on it...
