Hey guys, Im going from the stock dp to a 3" that takes an external gate. first I need recommendations for a good gate I can spend about 200-300 on one. Also what all do I have to do to swap over? Like do these take vacuum lines and where do you tie in, ect... I basically need step by step. Thanks in advance.

External wastegates are nice if you have a really powerful car. They are used to keep the boost creep away. It really is not a good investment in my opinion for those who want to run under 25psi most of the time. If I were you I would get the 3"DP from RJC with the Big Puck and keep things simple.

To go external on a 49 look at the Precision 38mm wastgate. You will need a boost controller. The black knob style Turbonetics offers is popular. You can get fancy and go AMS, AEM, Turbosmart, or Innovate/Exile electronic style too. You will need vacuum hose, fittings and some patience.

I love the Precision gate! Great product no doubt, I'd have to agree though, unless you're planning on running OVER 500-600 rwhp I'd stay with the internal. Things just start getting more and more expensive at this point, I'm running my external "tuner" style for now as I don't want to run a cheap controller after reading about Phoneguy and his engine failure, due primarily to an inadaquit boost controller. I'll go with at least an AMS500 when the wife allows me to spend more! :-)

Do you need the external gate? It's going to cost you a ton more $ and for a TA49, it's totally overkill. Even if you got the DP for free, you're in at least $250 more for the gate and Manual Boost Controller.

You dont need much. Look to spend around $500 on a good external setup.

rjc block off plate=$55
38mm gate=$250
2 wg fanges=$20
1' of 1 1/2" od piping=$5
2' section of flex pipe=$25

Pop a 1 1/2" hole in your crossover peferablly after the 2 headers merge together, weld in your flange connected to a peice of pipe, and your good to go. It's simple if you've done any type of fabracation work.

And btw...I vent my external gate to the atmosphere, in front of the pass side tire via flex pipe. running tial 38mm with 14.4psi spring and rjc mbc. Works flawlessly:cool:

I agree its probably overkill but like I said I already had the down pipe. I understand the advice that its going to be expensive but all I lack is the gate and some hoses and right? Also is there any reason other than cost I shouldnt run one? Im no where near 500whp but heck maybe one day and then ive got the dp and gate to handle it. Thanks and keep the advice coming! Eric.

Does the 14.4 spring mean you run 14 psi of boost?

The external gates for our cars aren't 100% Optimal like the Header fed ones you see on other cars. So IMO, you gain a PIA vs getting a good RJC DP with their new puck. Check out how large some of the turbos are that are being controlled by this puck, HUGE.

Also, if you're asking all these questions about the Gate then there's more too it than just, Gate and Hoses, correct? Do some searches, these aren't always even handling the new more efficient turbo's without creeping because our Platform isn't ideal for a DP with Wastegate.

IMO, save yourself time and $, sell it and get an RJC with the monster puck. Years from now when you get a new turbo you'll be 30 minutes and all smiles.

Well now im second guessing myself. So yall think just ditch it all and buy a internal gate dp?

Footprint of the RJC megapuck on a 6765 billet turbo unported...
If your wastegate is attached to the downpipe and fed off of the turbine housing I would really reconsider going external

Wow, that is crazy!
Please post a picture after you port it.

I have a 38 mm turbosmart off of the exhaust housing. 70 gtq turbo. 3 psi spring in gate and it makes 4 psi.

This pipe looks similar to mine, Im getting confused, are you running 4 lbs of boost? Also read back through this, Yes there are a lot of guys saying dont do it but there are some saying its fine and they have know problems.

You wont have any problems with an external gate. Make sure the downpipe flange is the same size as the housing on the turbo. For instance the stock opening on the turbo was 2.50 inches but when you go to a GTQ wheel the housing increases to 2.750 inches. Its a good idea IN MY OPINION to have matching port sizes.

The same goes for the wastegate hole. Many people have problems controlling boost when they go to bigger turbos. The stock waste gate hole can no longer dump enough exhaust to control boost.

If the housing and downpipe flanges do not match look at RJC for solutions on that.

This may prove interesting too.

Here are some pics of an external set up. You can see the hoses and where they go.
