What are these for??

I was looking through a box with some old wires I had and was wondering what these cylinder looking things are for which are wrapped around the cable. I see them on some cables but not others? I have also seen them on power packs for laptops. Anyone one know what they do?

They're called a "choke"......they are supposed to cut down on electrical interference .
 
yep

so you don't get that static in your recording. that's why they are on all things that record or can transfer a signal.
