Ok..so I took the GN out for a test spin this morning. This was the first time I have driven the car since the rear the rear u-joint let go back in September.

She doesn't want to shift now. It runs all the way up to high 4000's and if
I let off the gas a bit she will slide into 2nd. Never got out of 2nd gear
but I didn't have a lot of test road. Not anxious to get too far from home.

I have an Art Carr shift kit that used to firmly bang between gears.....that
is not the case now it seems.

I checked fluid level and trans cable and reset it per the usual method.
Still no crisp shifts and almost no shifts at all :-(

Soooo..........what do you think is up with the trans? I assume it was not
amused by the sudden loss of resistance at that high speed in 4th gear.

Is it time for a rebuild? I don't think I have line pressure any more :-(

Thanks,

Bill

thats what mine does .. it redlines when i get on it and then i let off and it slides into gear .... our tranny's are toast from what i gather... time for a rebuild ;)

I received this from a guy in my club.....

drop the pan remove the govenor and make sure the spring that holds the
govenor weights is still intact.

If the spring was launched consider yourself lucky. You should find it in
the pan. Re-install it and your problem is fixed. W/o the govenor
spring your trans will shift like you have it at WOT which is approx 4800 or so
for the 1-2 shfit.

If govenor is ok then your valvebody may have debris in it caused by
the driveshaft vibration. Putting it in first and some wot runs may dislodge stuff. But problem is something is making debris so would likely occur again. hopefully the vibration did not pound out the bushings thru the center of the trans. even a small vibration over a long period of time can do this. I have had this happen.

I will see what is happening inside on Saturday when I drop the pan :-(

cool.. thanks i will do the same .. i just havent had the heart to mess with my gn since i just got her put back together just 2 weeks ago

Souds like a good chance the gov. spring got shot out when you lost your u-joint, and if so when you reinstall it you need to pin it in with a setscrew so it don't happen again. :D

That's the ticket!!!

Woo Hoo!!!!

Dropped the trans pan and there was the govenor spring just sitting there. Put it back into its rightful place and I am back to crisp tire-chirping shifts.
