drivers side only has this in/out slop. Axles, ring gears and carrier are all new with about 200 miles

That looks pretty much normal. Depends on how the carrier has to be shimmed to get the proper backlash on the ring and pinion gears. The end play in the axles will vary side to side.

the concern here is the end play was not there before about 5 hard passes. the right side has no end play I can feel. Somewhat concerned of the safety. Have been hearing that c clips wear out, the pin wears out, and like said above shimming it as the clutches wear down.

what do you think of

possibly running non c clip axles?

If the differential was re built and the clutches weren't seated properly, it should be turned 100 times in each direction and then check the shims you will get more endplay when they seat. You can get C clips in different thicknesses.

I rebuilt mine using the procedure that Eaton has on youtube and I have almost no end play. I forget how much but I measured it with a feeler guage.
