What exactly does a chip control in our cars?

Pretty much everything from spark, fuel, to tranny convertor lock up....idle speed, fan control...

Two chips of the car- the larger one, as stated, controls the engine operations- timing, emissions, idle, transmission lockup, etc. Th smaller one is a limp home chip that takes over should the operational chip fail.
