I'm new to turbo cars and am wondering what the down pipe does. I've seen it associated with the waste gate and also catalytic converter. Can someone explain more what these do? Thanks!

In general all that it is responsible for is channeling the exhaust out of the turbo. The bigger it is, the faster it will exit and let the turbo spool quicker. The terry Houston style pipe has the wastegate built into it, other then that it is the same fuction.

You might read this for some basics. The down pipe takes the exhaust gases from the turbo, 'down' to the exhaust system, which is supposed to have a CAT....

HTH :)

Im sure all the TRs have Cat convertors on them, no one would remove an important emmision device  At least it looks like a cat

Its basically the exhaust pipe for the turbo. The 2 headers come together, go into the turbo. The gases spin the turbine (spinning blade thing on the exhaust side), which is connected to a shaft, that has the impellar/compressor wheel on the other side that sucks air in, and right after the turbine is the downpipe. Headers--->Turbine--->Downpipe--->Cat Converter or Test pipe--->Catback.
