I was just killing some time online searching Google images of some of the newer machines coming out... Challenger, Camaro, GTO, etc, and one thing that stood out is the lame FWD-style wheels.

To me it's not real muscle without the deep dish rims. It looks like all those factory wheels have spokes that lean out to the edge of the wheel, so they could have easily had straighter spokes with more of a lip...

BRING BACK THE DISH!!

That dish promotes bad handling with Independent rear suspension (which all the cars you posted have), because the suspension has to overcome the lever arm from the center of the wheel to the suspension mounting points.

In front, the more dish, the larger the wheel opening needs to be.

So both engineers and stylists like wheels with less dish.

And I think it also puts less of a load on the hub and bearings. And you'll also notice the track is a tad wider. All help in handling although I bet most of the improvement is from bigger tires with lower aspect ratios. I can remember when the C4 Corvettes came out in 84 and thought why the heck did they stuff FWD wheels under it? It been going on for years in other words.

I thought it also helped with aerodynamics. More surfaces at the outside profile of the vehicle than recessed within it.

physics and designers knowledge of , killed reverse off set. Hold a tire off a rim by the inner sidewall (closest to you) out at arms length, then hold one w/ your arm through the tire at the outter side wall. Feels lighter doesnt it! It takes a toll on hub bearings, shocks, springs, etc etc, it elongates their perceived length of travel and makes it hard to slow inertia further away.
I miss the dish as well.
