What is Hylomar? Used for heads for some reason?

one Hylomar type is a thread sealant, another type is a gasket dressing / sealant.

the gasket sealant is very tacky, holds the gasket in place nicely, and I've always had leak-tight seals on low pressure oil, fluid, and coolant systems.

never tried it for head gaskets, nor do I know that it's even recommended for that use.

I have some of the technical data sheets for the Hylomar product line --

The Hylomar "HPF" is a gel-like susbsartance in a tube, that's what I've been using for various low pressure & vacuum gaskets, and it works very well, does not harden, gaskets remain slightly moveable. It does not specifically list head gaskets as a "typical" use.

Hylomar "Aerosol" does list head gaskets as a typical use. But I dont have any experience with it.

hmmm, apparently Permatex has stopped making/distributing the Hylomar line, it's no longer at their website.

Hylomar is a British company; it seems Permatex was just licensing the Hylomar products for the USA market. It wil probably become much harder to find in USA . Too bad, I'll miss it

I just bought some Permatex Hylomar aerosol last month for my head gaskets. It was recommended to me by Bill Anderson for use with the Cometic head gaskets. My heads are on and no leaks to report. :smile:

Where can i get some permitex Hylomar Aerosol? Im probably going to use the RJC head gasket or the cometic w/ champion Irons. Bill actually built my last motor. Broken knock sensor kicked the felpro 1007 reciever groove wire gasket. Actually split the copper wire and kicked it out of the 0-ringed groove in the head

When hylomar first came out, it was marketed as an anaerobic sealant that set-up only in the absence of air.

You can also use Permatex High Tach Sealant on the Cometics.

it was used on my engines sce titan copper head gaskets without any oil to water or viseversa leakage. Wish I would have used it on everything else Automotive engineering sells it on the shelf locally here in the tampabay area. I would suggest a speed shop of some sort.

Hylomar was developed by Rolls Royce in Great Britain. Its purpose was to fill-in (or mark-up) the High and Low spots on sealing surfaces...thus the name.

When using steel gaskets instaled 'dry' (especially Cometics) it is rather likely that you'll have a leak right off the bat, may be even before you start the motor. Usually you can seal that up with a couple of the "Bar's Leaks"-like soluble tablets and a heat cycle or two of the motor. Cometics have a coating from the factory and the manufacturer will tell you to put them on dry, but for the aforementioned reason, I like to spray them first.

Sorry, the Hylomar products were discontinued from the Permatex product line at the end of last year. You can call the Permatex Tech Center 877-376-2839 and speak to one of our technicians. If you give them more information about your application they will be able to help you select another product.

Hylomar USA distrubutor

Hylomar currently has just one western US distributor. I haven't yet asked for pricing of small quantities.

I have used hylomar gel on my old T/A's thermostat housing. It has always seeped no matter what I did until I tried the gel. No experience with the aerosol version.
