It is in my 1991 Explorer 4x4.

I believe it is a Masda trans.

I killed mine and need to know what to look for - Also what other vehicles might use this trans.

TIA,

It's a

M50D- R1 >> Mazda 5sp overdrive. Ranger,Explorer, for sure and i think 90-96 t-bird {may be the bigger m50d-r2 though} share your trans. Look for a salvage yard unit, although it won't be cheap, It's better than spending real big $$$ to repair your exsisting trans, especially if it melted the input shaft and cluster gears {very common}.

Thanks for the info!!!!

Went low on fluid so it sounds like input is wasted - got nothing but 4th gear. But in low range 4th is like the equivalent of somewhere between 1st and 2nd so I can move the truck

About the $$$. I always thought a manual would be easier and cheaper than an automatic because it seems like a much simpler unit - but I seem to be proving my ignorance :p

What is there to doing a manual trans?

It's an easy trans to do, but

it's the parts bill that will shock you. Loss of fluid is very common with that unit. It leaks from the three rubber plugs in the top cover. By the time you notice the leak, most of the time it's too late. The trans has a troft like dam that takes the splash lube and directs it right to the front bearing, without the lube it doesn't take long before the trouble starts.
