What makes a tranny rebuildable or not?

I was told that with the 200-4Rs, that they can all be rebuilt, but that a certain part or parts must be good otherwise, the tranny is junk. The tranny is going to be fully built, when I say built, I dont mean just rebuilt, but in a performance sense. What parts of the tranny are more likely to wear and which arent? What parts need to be good for the tranny to be rebuildable? If any of the parts whether they are hard parts or not, are damaged or worn out, can they be "re-done" or will they have to be replaced? The reason I ask is, you know how you can turn rotars, but they can only be turned so much and so many times before theyre junk. Say a tranny was rebuilt, is there any parts that can be re-done and after 1 or however many times its been done so, it has to be replaced? What would be the most important thing that needs to be just right or has no room to say, "oh its fine, its not that bad, I'll just leave it as it is?" Anyhow, I dont want to drown everyone in questions, but I want to thank everyone in advance for any help. :)

In other words, what has to be good/reusable for it to be rebuildable? Someone told me that there were a few things that must be good inside to be able to use it. Otherwise youre going to have to invest more money than its worth. Thanks

You're lucky....we have some of the best 200-4R transmission guys in the country on this board.

The "good" 200-4R's are the ones out of the 86-87 Grand Nationals and Turbo Regals. These are the BRF code transmissions. The top of the food chain for stock transmissions.
I think the biggest thing is to be sure and have the BRF valve body.

If you want to put a lot of power through one you need to talk to Bruce Toelle (www.ptsxtreme.com)....or Chris at (www.ckperformance.com)....or Vince Janis

First thing would be to find a good BRF core for the build-up. Once again....this is the place to find one. Look in the parts for sale section or call one of the turbobuick/g-body used part places to find a core. (http://www.gbodyparts.com)

Good Luck,
John

So why dont the 84-85 200-4Rs fall into the "good" category?

What makes the BRF different from the BQs? If the tranny is going to be completely built with performance goodies, then does it matter if its the BQ or BRF valvebody? If the BRF is a better valve body, can you buy it seperately and install it in a BQ tranny? How much could I get a new or like new BRF valvebody? Now that I think of it, the valvebody was one of the things that needs to be good for it to be buildable/useable. But there is still other parts too. Anyhow, thanks for your input, I really appreciate it!

VB

Seems like I was reading the other day that there were very minor differences between the BQ and BR valvebodies, so it really didn't matter.

If you're more in need of a whole core to rebuild, then you should really check with Bweavy (on this board) he has a BRF core at a good price (cheaper than the new BR valvebody before shipping) I really only needed the VB and Gov for mine.

Tell him I sent ya, that I've found what I needed.... ;)
