what scan tool for 1984 gn

im going to buy a scantool for my 1984 grand national, i was wondering what the best one to buy is also am i going to need a laptop for this? ive seen scan tools for 86-87 but nothing for an 84-85 i want a good one only wanna buy it once, any help is greatly appreciated thanks

Upgrade the ECM to the 86/87 first. Then it is either a Scanmaster or a Powerlogger. I have both and the Powerlogger is way better. Brad

There's always winaldl if you got other places that need your money. It works good for what it is. Wish the guy could get it compatible with the fast update it would be great to use the logger program that is on it.

Scanmaster 2.1 is a great reliable scan tool. Only the ECM upgrade is required. (whcch should be done anyway) Powerlogger is definately better, and requires the ECM upgrade, and a laptop. Some people start with the scanmaster, then get the powerlogger later. Then you can hook the scanmaster into the powerlogger and use them both.

Don't forget, if you switch to 87 ecm and are using a scanmaster make sure you get the fast update chip

Man I might consider selling I know nothing about what yall are talking about! ECM upgrade I understand, Fast update chip? I've googles this stuff and come up with nada! Reminds me of why I have a mustang in the drive way also! I had no idea these cars were so complicated! I'm goin to spend a ton of money on this stuff and prolly buy stuff I don't need or wrong stuff!

You're on the right track. Best thing u could do is get on this forum and read and ask questions. We all started in your shoes...get a basic tune on that car, and you'll wonder why u still have that mustang...lol!

Hahaha that's funny man!! That mustangs pretty stout it means alot to me yall know the feeling when u build one from the ground up! But I know never underestimate the turbo 6 that's why I finally got one just never knew how difficult a 84 model car could be!! Thanks man yall are helping me alot! Is there a parts for sale or trade section on here? Maybe I just looked over it

Ha! Just kiddin! Definately check the parts for sale section. Try to support the vendors here on the board as well. Buicks in general are difficult, but they are worth the trouble, trust me!
