Hey y'all,

My car has always had this strange whisle sound at highway speeds. I did a search but didn't find much talking about this. So, if this has been covered already, my apologies.

I have this darn whistling sound that has NOTHING to do with the motor. It is a wind sound. It changes in pitch and sometimes is not heard at all. Of course, I hear it in the summer because I have the windows down. It isn't an exhaust leak as far as I can tell. At first I thought maybe it was the windshield trim or something getting air and hitting the frequency just right. But I wanted to know if anybody in here has the same problem. CURE PLEASE!!! I don't want to be a ricer with a whistle tip exhaust. :D

are you sure is not the turbo ? Mines whistles all the time. I can't explaine the sound but I'll try. Mine sounds like a cop car is coming towards me from a distance. Uuuuuuuuuiiiiiiiiiiuuuuuuuuummmmmm. I tought this sound was normal from the turbo.

I know it's not THAT!!!

I'm absolutely certain it's not the turbo. With the turbo, I would probably hear changes in pitch with the engine. Plus, I even shut the engine off while cruising just to make sure.. noise was still there.

I have the same sound. I only hear it at highway speeds above about 65. I had it on both of my '87 TR's. It definetly not the engine or turbo, but wind blowing past the body somewhere. I was going to post this awhile back but forgot to. Maybe air going past the front air dams?

I have the same sound at cruising speeds, seems like mine is coming from the pass. side mirror, probably just an irritating wind noise (definatly not a ricer whistle!)

it is common for antennas to whistle.
That's why the factory mast have a spiral shape now...kills the whistle.
take your antenna mast off (or turn the radio off if it's a power unit) and see if it goes away.

Where is it coming from?

I had a whistle coming from the front of the drivers side window area. Turned out to be a small hole in the a-pillar.

I had to think hard to find this info:

"At Expressway speeds, the car windshield pillar at the front lower edge can cause a sound similar to that made by blowing across the top of a soda bottle. Wind gets inside the pillar at the bottom where the welds are located and travels up inside causing the noise.
This noise can be cured by sealing any openings in the base of the pillar with 3-M Strip Calk, P/N 08578"

That's an interesting theory, although I'm having a bit of a tough time picturing the fix. Did he have a pic of that idea?? The idea sure makes sense though. Thanks for sharing that with us.

Man....

I have had that same whistling going on too right around 55-65 MPH. I moved my hand around the DS mirror and it seemed to disrupt it a little bit, but it still was whistling. I also ran my hand up and down the pillar and window seam to see if I could find it there...nothing. At first I thought is was around my front bumper area because I have cracked fillers....who knows.

my car sounds like a jet when i get going 70+ on the highway. the first time i was driving my car home i was on the highway, and it was making that noise (i happened to be driving by an airport at the time) and i heard it making that noise, i thought nothing it and thought it was a plane taxing. after about 5 miles i was like, what the hell, is this plane following me? and a couple minutes later i came to the conclusion that it was the turbo echoing off the barrier..

heh, i think its pretty bad ass, i brag to my friends about it, im like, 'yeah you wish your car sounded like a jet talking off'

heh, just me rambling, dont worry about it..

I love the jet sound- especially when you drive up beside someone and they start looking around like "what the hell is that?".

As to a cure for your whistle, sometimes a crack in weatherstip / door/window felt will make a pretty good whistle.
