So my buddy just bought an 87 GN last week and already has what appears to be a major trans problem. Here is his description of what happened. Any ideas what the cause might be?

Car was driving fine until I came to a light. Light changed I started driving and it felt like there was drag on the car. I took it slow the rest of the way home and at the next light the engine revved high about 3k rpms but I took it slow. I started to climb the hill and about 200 feet up it just stopped moving. I shut the car down and restarted and then I pushed on the gas slightly and it finally started to move but only 15mph at 3-4k rpms. I got it in the garage checked the fluid and it is at the right level. When the car is idling it sounds fine but when you push on the gas you can hear what sounds like a wire wheel spinning around hitting metal.

It may have sheared the stator support. Common problem if it's the original trans...never been rebuilt.

X2

You may need to drop the trans. and take a look. If it is and even if it isn't the stator. You should still replace the current one for a harden stator....it will be 20 bucks well spent.

The thing sounds horrible in P, N, and all Drive gears. In Reverse, it sounds perfectly normal.
