With all due respect, the charcoal canister isn't there to stop fuel smells.

It's there because the government wants automakers to save the planet.

And, like I mentioned earlier, FI engines are sealed. That's why there's no fuel smell. Since you still have the canister, you fuel system is still sealed. You can replace your charcoal with marbles or dice and it still wouldn't smell.

And a charcoal canister isn't the only thing keeping cars from smelling like gasoline. Every single carbed car ever made has a vented gas tank (and vented float bowls) but you never hear of those being a big problem. Even back when every car in the garage was carbed.
