ok what does the EGR actually do?

I have a RJC power plate

some people say to drill out the hole for the EGR and some dont

I dont want to drill it and find out later that I couldnt do that cause it cant be filled

which way has better advantages?

power,performance and reliability wise

You will probably find out that the EGR passage was completely carboned up and not functional when you remove the plenum. If your car has been running this way anyway, there is no need to drill the hole.

When I installed the power plate, I found the EGR passage completely carboned up. I drilled out the hole in the plate, removed the carbon in the passage, and found that the car smoked like crazy for two days while it burned the residual oil from the EGR passage. The reason that I tried the EGR was because in the old days, normally aspirated cars with EGR valves plugged had a tendency to ping. If I were to do it again, I would not have drilled the hole.

Do a search on 'EGR' and 'power plate'and you'll find all kinds of crap.

I think the general idea is to have a functioning EGR unless you have a chip made to adjust the timing for no EGR. I understand that you can get cruise knock because the standard chips expect it's function. Also, the EGR is closed at WOT, so it doesn't hinder performance.

In NJ, I think you're going to want a functional EGR system. With your smog rules especially!

egr valves

an egr valve is a basic emission controls devise which at certain times that the computer feels will not hinder performance diverts exhaust gases back to the intake. This is done by the egr valve which just opens and plugs and exhaust hole. Exhaust gases can not be burned again so it essientially is an attempt to cool combustion chamber temperatures down. The exhaust emission NOx is only present after about 1500 degrees or something like that i forgot the specifics. But on cold start ups there is no NOx and the egr vlave prevents the combustion temperature from reaching the point of heat which NOx could become overwhelming. Do not worry about the performance aspect man. Like the person before said at WOT the computer uses input signals and deems egr valve can not open because that would hinder driver input. Since the exhaust gases can not burn again its less fuel uin combustion chamber less of a flamefront equals less heat. Theres a little lesson for today. Id say keep it. Really wont hurt you and mr. state inspector will fail you if the valve is not present on visual inspection just like cats.
