Wheel stud remove and install--help...

Ok.had 2 bad studs so I smacked them out with a hammer,,pretty simple...I can get the new studs back by turning the axel in small amount to a certain spot that provides me enough clearance....

But I guess you cant use a nut to draw the stud in (stripped the stud),,,so it appears I need to remove the axle to press the studs in from the rear---so HOW do I remove the axle....

There really isn't any reason that I can think of that the replacement studs won't fit - unless they are the wrong studs. The studs should be .500 - .502 at the knurled area. Anyway, in order to remove the axle, pull the rear cover and rotate the ring gear (knock it out of park - turn driveshaft) until you see a 5/16" headed bolt which will be horizontal that goes through the pin holding the spider gears in the carrier. Remove the small bolt and work the pin up & down until it slides down out of the carrier. Be careful not to knock the spider gears loose if you can with the pin out. Push the "offending" axleshaft in a fuzz until the c-clip falls off & pull the shaft out carefully, so as to not drag it across the axle seal at the end of the tube. Personally, I'd try more studs & nuts first .

Matco & SnapOn make wheel stud installer tools, basically they are hardened nuts & some bushings. Although they cost some $40-50, it seems preferable to the hassle of removing an axle.

They shouldn't strip unless they're the wrong size. I replaced all 20 of mine using a lug nut to draw them in. I'd make sure you have the right ones.

I agree. I've done it many times. Pull in using an impact gun on the lug nut or by hand. Are you sure the studs didn't come from China or somethin'?

So not sure if they are cheap quality or not....

the ones you should have on car are metric 12 x1.5 , do you have axles with 1/2 inch studs ?
normally all it takes to install is a few large washers greased up and flip over a std open ugnut and crank the stud in

Yes Moser axles....

Have 2 of them done...the rest seem ok...
