I'm getting ready to replace the head gaskets on my car. While I'm at it, I want to either replace or recondition the engine top-side bolts, nuts, and washers. What I mean is the intake manifold bolts, valve cover studs/nuts/washers, and the various nuts and studs that hold other stuff (fuel rail, coil pack, etc.) to the intake manifold have lost their black coating and are starting to look a little rusty.

I would like to do one of two things:

A. Purchase new bolts and nuts with the black coating on them. (Are these bolts still available at dealers?)

B. Re-coat the existing bolts with a durable black coating.

I'm having trouble finding black-coated bolts and nuts on the internet. I'm also not having much luck finding a kit to apply the black coating to bolts (although I swear I've seen them before).

Anyone have a lead on either of the above?

Thanks,

Check Eastwood. They have a zinc plating kit. I was going to get one when its time. I would glass bead the bolts and then plate them. Grainger also sells zinc plated bolts I believe. I bought some suspension bolts from the dealer and when I got there it was over a hundred bucks. Went straight to grainger and got them for under $25

Does arp make a kit for buicks? Check jegs or summit i ordered a set for my small block chevy in stainless but the also came in black oxide

...just to answer the above posts.

I saw the zinc coating kit at Eastwood - but I prefer the stock, black finish.

ARP probably makes some of the fasteners for our cars, but they will be very expensive. I don't need a 190,000 psi nut to hold down the coil pack.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Cheap way. I mean really, how many do you see to Inspect Closely? It works well.
Wire wheel with a soft to med head bristle on a drill in a vice & then clean in laquer thinner. Spray with brake cleaner & then clear or satin black spray can & install after 24 hours dry time in a heated room or by a household heater etc.

Make sure Alloy Boltz sends you the correct kit. When I ordered mine a lot were not applicable to the turbo car. The box was marked "Turbo", but not all worked. Someone told me AB will send you the entire catalog and you can mix and match what you want. I would call them before ordering. They have great customer service and you will like the way they individually package and label the bolts.

I wish they had studs like stock as well. That would be perfect then!

Eastwood also makes a metal blackening kit. You blast them and dip them in this solution that reapplies the factory blackening.

Sorry about them not having studs instead of bolts that may have been in part from me ,when they put that kit together for the turbo cars it came from a list of bolts I sent them and I didnt want any studs when you call to order them just let her know you need studs and tell her which bolts the studs are needed for and she will send them. I had a few odd ball things done to my car so you may get a few extra things in that kit like 2 sets of bolts for the vacume block things like that. They will build you an exact kit if thats what you want just let them know. I used a mix of allen and butten head bolts on my car. I would also get 10 or so extra 8mm 3/4 to an inch long bolts for some reason I didnt have enough and had to order more but that may be becuse I used them on thiings like the heat sheld for the turbo too.
