I am looking for the two side seals on either side of rear brg. Don't really need the main seal, can I buy just the side seals? Is there a part # for them or do they come in some kit? If so what is the kit P/N? THANKS

PAUL

Update, after pulling the main cap, the previous owner had a new rear main seal installed, but did not know if it was a neoprene. It is a neoprene, but they did use the side seals that came with the rear main seals, not the RTV. I am guessing that is why I had the bad leak. Also the sealant used along the sides of the main cap appears to be a yellow tinted silicon or something, not the black RTV.

Anyone with more experience with the rear main seals, please comment. This is the first time I have done this type of work. PaulRV6 and I need some pointers on the side seals.

When I bought my car I had a rear leak. Some one had replaced it with a neopreme seal and side seals before me. So I replaced the seal and side seals again. It did not leak for several hundred miles. Then it leaked. Now I have done a rebuild and replaced the seal with all the precautions and suggestions and no side seals just RTV. I used alcohol on all surfaces to remove any oil residue before applying RTV. The engine was on the stand for a week before installing. I put oil pressure on the engine several times while it was on the stand and had no leak. Guess What?? I got a leak with less than 300 miles on the engine. Now what's up with that?? Who makes the absolutely best, best, best rear seal??
Thanks
At least three rear seal replacements. I am looking for "0" leakage.

I threw my side shields away when I re-did my rear seal. Just went to find them for you, but must have thown them into the trash can instead of the "box" next to my bench. I used a new tube of Permatex Ultra Black (598B) instead of the shields...warmed it up so it would flow OK and squeezed it into the sides until I could see it oozing out on both sides. Also added a small bead in the corner of the block where the 45 angle is instead of adding it to the corner of the cap. Thought it might get wiped off as the cap is moved into place. The instructions said to insert a wet nail or some small metal piece into the RTV to allow it to cure?? I did so and it just got all messy. Also added a thin film to the flat side of the cap so that it sealed against the block....not too much here or it could mess up the seal. I bought the neoprene seal from Jack Cotton.

Used the instructions posted in gnttype.org. Offset the split of the seal about 1/4" so that the seal split is about 1/4" from the cap to block split. Made sure everything was clean first.

I had a heck of a time remembering which way was the front of the car for seal installation (grooved side faces front) alignment in the cap...ended up installing it in cap as I laid under the car to be sure it was right.

And mine has lasted 265 miles so far...fingers crossed. :)

Good luck, Bob

Arguably it is the stock waxed-rope seal that will be best. It covers the broadest range of tolerances...

In parting, you will find that these cars leak back there not matter what... nature of the beast.
