which cylinder is what?

ok which cylinder is cylinder number 1? is it the driver side cylinder nearest to the front of the car? is the number 2 cylinder parallel to number 1 cyl.? and is the number 3 cylinder the middle cylinder on the drivers side?

correct me if i am wrong anyone but i believe it's 1,3,5 on the driver side from front of car to firewall and 2,4,6 on passenger side from front to firewall

thats what im saying. i think its like a zig zag pattern starting w/the cyl. nearest the alternator and zigging and zagging its way back to the firewall

I swear this should be a sticky cus I had to ask also. Just couldn't remember for the life of me which side had #1.........LOL

And no it isn't a stupid question especially if you have the engine on the stand and upside down and are holding the #5 piston :Þ

IN all engines. The forwardmost cylinder is #1. In a V engine you'll notice one head is forward more than the other. The forward head is the bank with #1.

Yes, in a Saab the rear cyl is #1, but the engine is in backwards....

So, if you're holding #5 piston in yer hand, with the engine upside down, you find the front of the engine (look for the timing cover area.... or the side OPPOSITE the engine stand) and find the forwardmost cylinder, then put the piston in a rearmost cyl on that bank in a GM V^. In a ford V6 it would be the 2nd cyl on the OTHER bank

Hey there Jim, I'm going to muddy it up a little...

I know that the 66 Buick 401, 425 nailhead motors were opposite...1, 3, 5, and 7 were on the passenger side, front to back and 2, 4, 6, and 8 were on the driver's side, front to back...firing order was also a bit strange as well, 1-2-7-8-4-5-6-3...

edit...BTW, the forewardmost cylinder is still #1, but as mentioned, it is on the pass side on the 401, 425 Buick motors...Same as what you said, but just reversed from "normal" GM engines...

I never mentioned a side. No all cars are the same. Whenever its in question, look at the front of the motor. The head closest to you is #1
