Looking at using BFG DR on a 8.5" rim.
The sizes I am looking at are
275x60x15, - 28" dia. - 8.9" tread
295x65x15 - 29.6" dia - 8.5" tread
315x60x15 - 29.8 dia - 11" tread
I have the rest of the specs on them.

What I am looking for is first hand knowledge on how these sizes preforms on the street & at the track.
Tell me all the good & BAD things (other than DON'T drive in the rain).

Thanks,
Gary

On an 8" rim, your gonna be limited to the 275/60-15 tire. The section width of the others are too wide for use with a 8" rim and also their too wide in section width to fit a car without a frame notch/mini-tub. Even then, it's still darn near impossible to fit the 315/60-15 in a G-body with a frame notch without sticking out.

I run the 325/50-15 on a 9.5" rim with a frame notch/mini-tub. They are working excellent for me on a nose heavy N/A bbc Malibu.

Performance of these tires will vary depending on the cars chassis mods as well as it's total power output. Some cars work well on DR's, other really struggle for decent hook consistently.

275X60's work better than regular tires on the street (ie some traction)

they don't work at all at the drag strip for me....even if I idle off, when the boost hits---bye, bye drag radials...or pedal to the 1/8 and when the boost comes in at 100 mph -- bye, bye DR's

My DR set up

I run the 315/60's on my car now, but prefer the 325/50's. I have the frame notched, and the wheel tubs moved in. I run 11" rims w/6" b/s. Best Et w/ DR's is 9.23

I should have listed that I am presently (since 1992) running BFG Euro 305x50x15 on the car now. I am using 8.5" (8-1/2") rims.
NOT THE SAME TIRES BUT SAME SIZE :D

Of course these aren't doing the job and that is why I am looking at something better for limited street & track use. In the last year I logged under 1,000 miles on this car.

If you know of somethoing better than BFG DR in large dia. Tell me about them.

Thanks,
Gary

limited street or limited track?

the new MT drag radials are supposed to be excellent (can't get 'em yet tho)

MT ET Streets will provide decent track performance and are legal on the street (bias ply tire....limited tread life)

as will the Hoosier QT Pros

Limit use on both the track (3-5 times per year MAX)and the street.

That is what I have heard as well. You are right about waiting..

I hear no mention of my 275x50x15 DR's. They must be discontinued. I run them with spacers and get minimal rub.

only 26" tall........if making some power, they are too short

Good point Woody, I will go with 60's next time so I'm not running out of gear through the lights. The MT DR's do sound intriguing. Do you know if they'll come in a 275/60?

 275/50's (approx. 10" width) give much better traction than 275/60's. Lots of folks have run them on stock width wheels with no issues. If your car run's 11.5's than a taller tire than stock would be the flavor. If you run in the 12's a taller tire may hurt your et.:) ;)

your signature is quite impressive...please give us some more info on your car and where you are located?

:) OK you asked for it now prepare to be bored. IN 2000 I put down 10.51 @ 130+ mph with a 1.53 60 ft. 3 to 4 pound launch with 23 pounds most of the way down the track but creeped up to 24#s right near the finish line. One full past was made due to no roll cage. In 2003 no changes since last time I went back for another full pass; same launch with a 1.49 60 ft. ( 4 hundreds quicker), 8 hundreds quicker buy the 330 ft. running the same boost as before, than all hell broke loose, I am not the sharpest knive in the drawer but my shoulders can take it. I forgot that I had left the car in 2nd gear during the burnout and I hit the 6350 rev. limit somewhere before half track, that may have been a 10.30 something pass. I knew at the time the driverside exhaust was leaking but did not know that the rear tube on the passenger side had a crack all the way around except for the last 1/4 inch and another tube on that side had a 2 inch tear. I did get to make another pass that day @ 130mph but with a 1.59 60 ft. no new ET record . Since then I have replaced the stock exhaust with postons which I have cleaned up before installation. I think I can get 25#s now and with a harder launch who knows? I run 10 by 28 inch Goodyear slicks on 15 by 7 rims to get these times. I plan to make two more upgrades/changes that may put my everyday driver into the 9's if the trans can take it. I have a PE front mount, P-trim 70 turbo with a racegate mounted on the turbo, ATR 3" down pipe, 83 # injectors, GN-1 heads, Max. E. chip, 9 inch 16930 Art Carr converter and Poston headers "now". Let me know if I supplied enough info. PS: 224 hyd. roller
:) ;) :D

all but the weight of your car....sounds like it is running well on so little boost!

:) The car weight at the time was approx. 3650 lbs. with driver: no more, maybe less depending on fuel amount. I have weight the car a couple of times. The car at the time had all the body parts that came on it for the factory. The converter is an off the shelf Art Carr 16930 purchased from Bowling Green Customs at the time which I think Art Carr has now upgraded to the 19930 (made with better stuff). As far as stall that depends on launch boost, to tell you the truth I watch the boost not the tack but I am sure it will get up to 3000 rpm or so.   PS: I use a Scanmaster & EGT meter for tuning.:o Woody, what kind of boost did you run to get that number?:)
