I found a good deal on a used Direct link ... I'm prob gonna buy it or should I get the scanmaster 2 instead or turbolink or what?? What are the benefits of each? Which will help me tune the car more accurately?

i know guys w/both kinds and i can tell you that the turbo link is more informative and you can play it back on your computer. it gives not only codes but possible causes and fixes. the turbo link needs a laptop to work tho. the scanmaster sits in the car and displays the vital info needed. it is useful for looking at critical things such as KR, BLM's, INT, etc. while driving. IMO, i wouldnt want a laptop sitting in my car waiting to be stolen by thieves. for tuning at home or when you have time to sit down and tune i would use a turbo link.

I guess Direct Link is a combination of Direct Scan and Turbo Link


I recommend always to buy a Scanmaster first because it is small and portable and is a great tuning tool. However at some point you are going to need a scan tool capable of recording to get your car tuned to its optimum level. Direct Scan gives the most data but requires slight ECM modifications and can be a pain to connect and disconnect. It is mostly for advanced users

Good call blackbuick. I don't think Direct Scan is for weekenders like myself. I'm in the process of hooking it up now. After 1 spilled bottle of solvent, and a bent ECM casing, I'm still not done If it's a daily driver car, and you're not gonna tune it for racing, Scanmaster sounds like the way to go. My car is always garaged, so I don't mind leaving the laptop in it.
It depends on what you wanna do. Monitor critical stuff with simplicity? Scanmaster. Wanna get optimal tuning for drag racing? Get one of the laptop based ones.
The thing is if you decide to upgrade, you won't have trouble selling your scanmaster here.
BTW what kinda deal did you get (if you don't mind me asking?)

I recommend a Scanmaster for every TR. It's always there and easy to see. I like to use it for monitoring while you drive after its really tuned in with a laptop scantool. TurboLink and DirectScan are both great tools. New TurboLink has lots of new features which you need to consider. DirectScan is great for those that need high speed data (18 fps).

I recommend a scanmaster. It's so easy to use and doesn't take much space in car. Makes it easy to read your 02 and knock without taking your eyes of the road. Does have a recall recording. I made some 11 sec passes with no problem tuning. I do agree that direct scan and turbolink are maybe a little better, but I don't think they are that important until your in low 11's and in the 10's. I personally will be going to a FAST system when my next project is done.

Anything but DS is too slow for racing. On an 11 second car you only get 8 or 9 frames of data. Try to figure out, for example, a shift point from that...
