When I get back from the Gulf next month I'm thinking about a smart buy/lease instead of outright buying.
The car will be for my wife as she will proably only put 7500 miles a year on it.

It thinking of an 05 GTO...it's for the wife  really.

Like some helpful hints and how to stay out of any paperwork he11 holes :frown:

Thanks.

Smartbuy is a good program - you "own" the car.

The plans vary by how many miles you plan to drive each month. If you go over, there are $'s to pay if you opt to get out of the program.

Smartbuy allows you to get out of the contract at a predetermined time (sometimes earlier). You can just drop the car/truck off at the dealer and walk away, trade in for another (no negative equity!!!!), or keep it an keep paying. Smartbuy allows for lower payments like a lease but you OWN the car and can sell it at anytime BUT those lower payments can come back to haunt you.

Example: your smartbuy is based on a 5 year loan with the 4th year being your "out" year. You opt to walk away from it because you are unemployed. Done, thats it. You have 4 years of credit history in your favor but no car... and no debt.

Example: your smartbuy is based on a 5 year loan with the 4th year being your "out" year. You opt to keep the vehicle. At this point you have options - pay the balloon payments or refinance for a longer term. Certainly some pro/cons there! Easy to get yourself into a 6th+ year of financing!

My ONLY regret was I was on a 1200mile per month limit and went over some. This cost me $1500 !! Zoiks! I learned the hard way that if I say "I dont remember what the mileage limit is", they cant instantly verify that. He took my guess at something higher as accurate. The $1500 bill came after the truck was gone and I had another vehicle. While this makes me look dumb I had to keep it short here. If you need more info lemme know.

I lease

I lease my wifes cars because it fits my situation. My job keeps me on the road most of the year so i cant worry about her car braking down for any reason. As long as its being leased its under full warenty. When im done with it after 4 years and 45,000 miles later i just get a new one. Some things to know. First my wife married a car guy so i dont lease Toyotas or Nissans .For an example, the first on was a 1999 RAM AIR WS6 LS1 TRANS AM black ofcores. The car msrp was 31,650,00 we put 3000 down the note was 450 per month. 4 years later 1 windshield 2 sets of 17" tires ,i hand in the keys for another one. But they quit making them ,so we had to get something els. We both like black i like boost so she got a 2003 AMG SLK 32 , 350 hp supercharged V6 yes its fast. One year of tire burning left on it. So whats next ,im keeping my fingers crost for a Z06. Anyway if you drive more than 50 miles a day or 15,000 a year leasing is NOT FOR YOU dont even think about it. :)

And to be very clear, the smartbuy is NOT a lease. A little tidbit: you are not required to put money down (you should) nor are you restricted on service or how you keep records... at least in my experience.
