Think I may put it on my Xmas list. Do you need a different unit for cable vs. satellite??? Was thinking of getting the cable one then if I ever get satellite, can I use the same unit or will it not work??

Which one do you have, do you like it/what don't you like that another model may do that yours doesnt?

I have it, Its the greatest. I have one of the first units out, but when you set it up, It asked if you have sat or cable and then set it up for either. I have it hooked up to digital cable and the only complaint I have is that sometimes it records the wrong channel, and you have to update the program info every 2 weeks.

Jim,

It is my understanding that you can use your PC as a DVR and don't have to purchase the over-priced equipment or pay the TiVo fees. The company that sells TiVo has a large marketing expense. The PC versions have no marketing machine behind them. Accordingly, they cost less and are less well known.

Do some research on the 'net and I'm sure you'll find plenty of data.

I have a TiVO. It's awesome. A PC can be configured to do the same thing I suppose, but you really can't compare the two. If you were really resourceful you could program a universal remote with a "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" and all the other stuff on a TiVO. You could make or maybe buy the intuitive GUI TiVO has created, too. TiVO has done it all though, and done it well. It knows what's on and when it's on. It knows what I like and knows to record it. It's basically a Linux PC but it's very intuitive and easy to use.

I don't have the details to answer your question, but some insight. A co-worker LIVES by his TiVo. With the exception of football on Sunday, he NEVER watches live TV. He has the best unit they sell, upgrades almost every year, subscribes to TiVo service, has ALL the cable channels, and he has it linked to his home PC (wireless network). He enters all the stuff he wants to see and it does the rest. It records the shows and he watches them when he wants. He can enter a movie that he wants to see on a wish list, and it may take months for it to air, but when it does, it will record and he gets a notification that it's there. Its a FIFO setup, so the oldest stuff gets deleted automatically when space runs out. He can even go online from work and adjust his wish list at any time. I think it looks like a great deal...but I don't watch enough TV to justify the cost.

I love it! The best invention since the VCR. Now I never tape over my Wife's Oprah or Dr. Phil with Horsepower TV. Well worth the investment. They are as cheap as VCR's now. In the last year they have come down from $500 when I got our 65" HDTV to $150 a few months ago. I think they are under $100 now. The subscription rate is $5/month for the TIVO service. We used to pay that for another receiver in another room to tape things. We has a Satellite too. Been a DirecTV subscriber since 1997. Cable sucks. My cable modem is slow now!
Just my two cents...............

its the best invention since the tv! EVERY tv should have tivo, they should make it for radio too. Mine is built into the satelite reciver, thats kind of nice because everything is made to work together. its great , if you see somethign you want to watch again, just rewind it and watch it as many times as you want, or slowmo for the good stuff:D or rewind it, then record it to watch it later. the satellite tivos are from what i've seen a bit cheaper than a tivo tivo, i don't know if thats only with a sign up deal or what, but even the $300 for one is well worth it if you watch tv
