I have 2 questions regarding the trigger debate:

1.) Do you think there's a higher propensity for more accidental shootings (as in the video) if more officers practiced keeping their finger on the trigger as you do? YES/NO

2.) Do you feel the Las Vegas officer in the video would have discharged her weapon if her finger was outside the trigger guard and along the frame as opposed to being on the trigger as she demonstrated? YES/NO

These are simple yes/no answers and either a yes or no will suffice. I'm not passing judgement in any way as there is no clear cut answers in this profession. Debates on tactics and procedures will continue long past our time.

Yes sr71 my finger was on he trigger of the weapon in the situation with the burglar suspect. The threat level was already there. The suspect had the weapon at his side pointing it towards the ground. When I asked him to drop the weapon I had my weapon locked on him.At the time I was carrying a Smith And Wesson 25-5 in the 45 Long Colt Caliber. At 1 point he started to raise his weapon and I pulled the hammer back on mine.At that time was partner was behind me literally telling me to shoot him.I just kept telling the suspect that if he did not do as I said he would die-that this what not TV and I would not miss.In real time this situation lasted about 1 minute to 1 minute 15 seconds and it seemed much longer.I would have been justified in using deadly force but chose not to because of a feeling that I had.I could have lost in this situation, but I just followed my instincts.I held back some in my description of the other two situations becaus my daughter was sitting here with me.In the first situation the suspect lost.He died.In the second situation the suspect was hit in the shoulder throw the back glass of the stolen vehicle that he was in and he was arrested by me.I shot him as I was diving away from him heard him scream as I hit him.I broke my hand when I hit t ground. He got out of the parking area and made it into the street but was involved in a traffic accident. These situations happened quite regularly in Houston.By routine I meant situations like a traffic stop at night with your weapon drawn and by your thigh, approaching a vehicle with tinted windows, etc.I shot approx 200 every other week in training.I never had an accidental discharge.I was always confidentin my ability to judge the situation and use force or deadly force if needed.I have had 2 partners that had accidental discharges in the car.Another that shot a hole in the back door of a cruiser with over 50 officers around.Another that was behind me during a prowler call that was walking behind me with a riot gun that stumbled a discharged the gun in the ground directly behind me.I have seen an undercover killed during an arrest with an accidental discharge. In every situation the offending officer had his finger on the trigger when the situation dd not warant it.In the video in my opinion the situation did not call for the female officers weapon to be drawn and her finger on the trigger.Unless their was something that we do not know about, weapons involved, felony arrest, etc. With as much experience that you have I believ if you think about it you will agree. As a matter of an Officers daily routine when a weapon is drawn such as a Glock the officers finger should be on the trigger guard until the threat level is assessed. That your training and instincts will tell you when it is necessary.I think that every situation that you are involved is different,so no set rules so to speak-just training,instinct,skill,judgement,etc..Thanks for all your replies and I appreciate the comments and replies.Final note the Officer in the video in my opinion was way,way wrong in this situation.Scary for me to watch-I have come too close to this situation before.

Thanks for your comments.I am no longer an Officer.I still take courses through Sam Houston State University and I hold a Permanent Certification as a Peace Officer in Texas.I worked for Knox County Sheriff's Office here for a short time.I was amazed at the lack of training and proffesionalism and resigned.I had applied for some smaller agencies here and the Chief was usually younger than me.I have been out of the field since 93,but I am considering going back into it.Around here they prefer a younger individual with no experience...So my odds probably are not real good. Thanks again for your comments.
