Hi Everybody
I ve had this problem with my tranny for a while now and no clues yet of why it is doing that.Normal driving ok-- half to moderate trottle ok --wide open - it will stay in first gear and not shift at all if I stay on it and then as soon as I lift my foot of the throtlle a bit it shifts and it does the same thing from second to third...Have tried Tv cable adjustements from one way loose to tight ...When the tv cable is adjusted to factory specks -- the tranny acts the worst in hanging up and as I loosen one -two notches gets slightly better but still no upshift.Any input would be appreciated.

no upshift

I guess I will try cleaning up the valve body and see if there is some kind of debry .I didn't realize that this is a subject that not a whole lot of you has seen or troubleshot yet.

Without knowing the transmission's mileage and history, it's difficult to pin this down. I'll assume that your transmission was working OK at some point before this problem cropped up and that it's the proper, matching valve body and governor.

Pulling the VB down to clean and inspect is a good idea. Replace the valve body gaskets while your at it because they affect governor circuit feed. Also, drop your governor out for inspection. Make sure that your governor cover gasket wasn't damaged. Verify that the spring is still on the light weight and that the Teflon seal on the governor shaft still fits snuggly in the cover.

Check the govenor spring yet?
They kind of act like what you descibed when it pitches the sping;)

no upshift

My bad --i never posted what car ----This is a 1987 - t -- Tranny never shifted correct since I ve'owned --7 years now..Was given to JANIS for a total rebuild 3-4 years a go and the problem was adressed to him that shifting from first to second was never right but when I picked up the car it acted exactly the same as before. Was taking back to him but the only thing I got out of it tighter -krisper shift points original problem still exists. It does have "brf" valve body ,tranny cooler, new tv cable .I think is time to get down and dirty and learn all I can about these trannies since I know I will keep this car for ever.

I see its been a on going problem and didnt just start acting up:D

Valve body

I just dropped valve body and what do you know -- it is not purple stripped anymore but yellow:confused:  Anyone knows what is this thing off .My buddy JANIS stuck it to me again.

Take a look at this illustration. On your valve body, what is stamped on the aluminum sleeves for the 1-2 TV, 2-3 TV & 3-4 TV?
bushing for 1-2 I cannot get out on 2-3 #230 -1 on other side of the bushing there is h-8 or 3 bushing 3-4 #058 with h2 below it .
I also noteced that there was only two check balls on the top portion of the valve body ...

Sorry, I should have been more specific. You didn't have to disassemble the VB. The numbers I was speaking about are stamped on the very end of the bushing so they are visible just by looking at the side of the valve body.

valve #s

valve 1-2 has #15 ------ 2-3 has letter "F "and 3-4 has nothing.

Went to local junk yard toray and found a valve body out of 200 4r but not sure what is --what car it came from --got it for free..has OG13 painted --were br3 shoul be --anybody got an idea .

The OG valve body came out of an

Oldsmobile. It's not a desirable valve body. The br3 ink stamp is usually by the manual valve {by the shift linkage}. The bushings numbers in the body you have are correct for the Brf {gn} trans. I believe the 3-4 line up has a number {i'll check when i get home} Has this vehicle ever had the valve springs replaced? Does it still have the cat converter on it? I don't think you have a trans problem. It may be that the engine is a little tired and can't get the vehicle up to the minimum WOT shift speed specs {just a thought}.

Engine has been rebuilt about 6 000 milles a go ...Revs up to 5400 rpm (no knock) but at the track acting as if I am holding it in first manually --tranny will not shift untill I let off the gas some.""Which other valve body is desirable besides brf "if by some chance I come up on one..

Here is the low down on the brf shift valve

Bushings. The 2-3 bushing should have a # 21 stamped on the end. The 1-2 bushing should have a #15 stamped on the end. The 3-4 Bushing should have a letter F stamped on the end.

Something to try; Add a little weight to the SMALL governor weight {the one with the spring}. I don't know if your current governor spring is pinned or not. If it isn't, try this; take a aluminum pop rivet that measures 1/2'' long and has a grip range of 1/8 - 1/4 inch. In the governor small weight there is a hole the spring is riding over, install the pop rivet there. After the rivet is installed make sure the spring isn't binding up and the weight will move in its full travel. This will do two things 1. keep the gov spring from shooting out. 2. Add a little weight to the governor to make the trans upshift a little sooner. There are various ways to pin the governor this is just one way. :D
