this is my girlfriends car, its a 96 grand prix with the FWD 3100. The car seems to have no power at all and it has a ticking noise coming from the top of the engine(intake area) im pretty clueless at this point, anyone have either experience with these or a suggestion??

Any engine codes? Check engine light?

The 3100 is the old Chevy 2.8/3.1....

Lets see, usual problems with those? Fuel pressure regulator goes bad and fills the air cleaner box with gas.

Clicking noises up top? worn cam? Does the thing have oil and oil pressure? Antifreeze full and not contaminated (blown head gasket).

We need more info to help...

I think intake gaskets are a typical problem on those but I'm not sure. Dunno if that would cause a ticking problem or not though.

When cold, does it have a real hig idle when first starting? That would indicate the intake gaskets are leaking and need to be replaced. I didnt think they were a big problem on those cars, I know the 3.4 DOHC that is almost a maintenance interval on those things....

You know what? Lack of power, ticking noise? Maybe a head gasket blown to the lifter valley? :(

Time for a compression check....

ill do compression test tomorrow.....there is no high idle however and the oil looks good. wouldnt i know if it was a head gasket by milky oil?

they have had problems with noisy lifters.
they get clogged if you are not religous with the oil changes.

i have done lots of them.

A head gasket gan blow in many places - including inside the lifter valley, or outside the block, without breaking the seal on the water or oil passages.

I have a TR in my driveway now with that very problem.

I know they are noisy by nature - but you have a lack of power problem as well, correct?

As far as changing lifters - its the usual v6 procedure. Remove upper intake, remove lower intake, remove valve covers, and its all right there!

Good luck!

PS - replace the fuel pressure regulator while you are in there - it will be worth the trouble...
