I am interested in doing header repairs and other welding work such as making test pipes and other repairs. I have been welding piping and tubing for years in the Nuclear Power industry. I just did my own header a month ago during my rebuild and also made a test pipe. These are actually very simple task. I would like to do a repair or two for free(You pay shipping) just to get things started and see what the response would be like. I have pics of my header also. Tig weld with 308L and back purged. Let me know if interested. Also what do you think would be a fair price to perform the repair. Or may be better to get some core headers for a start. Anybody got old ones for sale?

Thanks
Tim

Darn, I just had my DS done. I'm sure it will crack, probably already is, on the GN also. I don't know prices that well, but they had 2 hours in mine for a total of $83. I thought that was a little high, what do you think? I did have a triangular gusset welded between the 3 and 5 for strength, and the crack was bad and was welded more than one pass with the stainless.

Tim, I would be interested. Did you bolt the header to a head before welding? Did you add any braces to prevent future cracks? Any idea on turn around time? Free would be cool but if not how much?

I've got my original old set stuck in a box in my garage. Lotsa cracks. Let me know if interested in practicing welding on them. I'll need them back eventually cause I keep them as a spare.

Yes, I can bolt the header to a head, but that does not stop all warpage. Regardless of what you bolt it to your going to still get warpage unless it is stress relieved which is another process and story. The pattern that you weld in is what actually reduces the warpage. If all cracking is on one side(which I doubt) you would have to overlay weld on the other side to keep it uniform. Bolting to the head will help but not eliminat warpage. I welded mine off the head with minimal warp and they seal great. I do use gaskets. I did not install the gusset support on mine I just built up weld heavy in between the top of 3-5 joint. No at this time I am not porting, matching,or altering the headers just weld and crack repair. I did make some bushings to go in the header bolt holes for proper alignment to the heads. This was easy too.
Thanks
Tim

Gn1220 and Thunder send me an e-mail and I will give some more details on where to send your headers you to Chad.
