Well, on top of all the mess with the PWM fan, the laptop has taken a dump....With all my tuning "stuff" on it.
Worked fine this am, I shut it off, using the power function. I reopened later and the set-up utility booted.
I tried to do the "save/exit" key. etc, etc, including adding a user and admin passwords.
Hit "save and exit", no deal, screen blacks out for a few seconds, then reboots and again asks for my password. As soon as I enter it, it opens the set-up utility again.
I'm on hour 2 trying to get this done.
NE1 lead this dumb hillbilly old man to a fix?😫
TIA

Probably not something we can triage on a forum. LIkely needs in-person attention.

Problem is likely the laptop itself, so solution is getting the storage device out of the laptop, copying all your crap out, and getting a new one.

Probably.

this is why backups and such are so important. hardware dies unexpectedly but if you have the data and the software it can be replaced and up and running.

x2 on someone in person to perform some wizardry on it might help.

Did some more "digging"..
This is an ASUS LT.
Seems this LT has a known "issue" with the set-up screen just popping up.
It also has a problem with the hard drive connection "taking a hike".
They suggest taking the back off, disconnecting the HD & re-plugging it, removing the batt and then reassembling.
Tried to get the back off.... 1 corner hung, said screw this :poop: . Taking it to the guru today.
Going to "edumacate" myself with using the "cloud" or a remote storage device.
At least it's not devolved to the notorious "blue screen" disaster.............Yet.
Time flies when one is having "fun". Thought it was 4-5 yrs old w/little use...........NOT! Near 10.
Thanks for the responses.

Just a hd or memory stick can do wonders if one takes the time to create some savings. I hope the wizard or who ever you go to is successful.

My goto guy spent the time to go thru the LT...
Searched thru all connections, devices, battery, etc.
Found no fault.
Pulled the HD, put it in a desktop.
It booted and worked just fine.
The next test showed the BIOS had scrammed. JUNK.
Loaded the contents onto a 1TB Seagate remote and ordered a new Dell.
This new unit will become my "desktop too, as the current one is about 7 yrs old and no more security from MS on Win 10 as of October.

Fortunately for me and my wife our son and his buddies are pretty literate and we get the bennies and encouragement to do a save as with a date or at least a month and yr in four digits at the end of a file name so they can reconstruct the crashes when they happen. He hooked us up with a nifty unit that attaches to the back of the monitor and has a little hd to run the os and a BIG hd to save the pix, files and other some such that needs saving.

Glad yours got put back together and I hope it goes well going forward.
