My power window moves slow up & down especially the right door
it`s very-very-very slowwww.I don`t think the Kirban`s window
kit will work for me.Thinking about replacing with the 78 Regal type motor and regulator but not sure about the installation and where to buy it since it`s too old. HAS ANYONE INSTALLED A FASTER MOTOR?
Thanks in advance.

power windows

A few years back I upgraded the power windows in my GN. I did a write up on it but never got around to submitting it. If you are interested I could dig it up and email it to you. I also have a digital camera now so I could maybe find the switch that needs a minor modification and take a picture of it for you. I didn't buy anything new it was all auto wrecker supplied parts. HTH

PLEASE post that publicly. I sorely want to upgrade the motors in my GN.

I simply went to autozone and purchased both motors....cleaned the tracks and used grease...reinstalled the new motors and plugged it in = works perfect...but it isn't like today's cars.

Nevertheless, a marked improvement from the 15 sec up time before the change!!! You might not need any modifications...just some tlc.

Id also like any info as far as upgrading the window motor speed or lack there of. Its kind of ironic how many cars on here can probably make 2 or more 1/4 passes in less time than they can roll up the damn window

I have found that.....

...the new Siemens P/W motors that AutoZone handles consistently work faster than the stocker in pretty much every car model I have used them in.

I am also interested in teh write up you are talking about. Also how much were those window motor units you bought???

Thanks!

Yes please post the info!

How much were the motors @ autozone?

On the older 78-79 motor...........first of all, you can't find any. Secondly, they are a lot heavier. Thirdly, that they move the window any faster is a myth.

My passenger window had been slow for some time. Finally stopped working. Problem was the connection to my buttons. Just cleaned them up and now they work at adequate speed.

New motors will certainly speed you up! ;)

Early Model Window Motors.

There's a write up (brief) on how to use the motors out of an "A" body to improve performance. It is here:Window Motor Swap
Note that he TIMED the motors. The early motors closed windows in 2 seconds, compared to 4 seconds for the late motors. Doesn't sound like a myth to me. But they are heavier.

Here is a hint that will help in the removal of the motors and cut down the R & R time greatly. You will find that the motors are being held by 3 - 13 mm bolts. These bolts are facing the inner sheet metal and cannot be reached inless the assembly rivets are drilled out and the whole thing is taken out.

Since you had to remove the door panel to get in this far take a close look at the outside sheet metal right where the motor is located. You will find 3 small dimples in a triangular pattern in the area of the motor. These dimples are telling you where the motor bolts are at. Take a small hole saw or large drill bit, big enough to get a 13mm socket in. And drill through the dimples. You will now see the attaching bolts.
Remove the bolts , disconect the motor and remove through one of the access holes in the door.Took me 30 mins total to do my pass side Siemens motor.

I believe that Kirban's was selling a hot wire kit for the power windows since there is a tremendous amount of voltage drop on the window circuit.

It's on the GN/TType site, it must be true. I'll tell ya what..........make the swap and see if they don't go at exactly the same speed if not slower. The argument is really moot, because you're never going to find 78-79 motors. I actually bought this "myth" about 6 or 7 years ago, made the swap to find out for myself, it is a "myth". Don't believe everything you read. ;)

I suspect it would be possible to swap a GN engine into a Rambler and make it slower, but that doesn't mean it will be true in all cases. The change from the "A" bodies to the "G" bodies was made to save weight, and meet CAFE standards. May have saved money, too. IF you have motors out of the "A" bodies that are in good condition, AND you use the regulator balance springs, which aren't used in the "G" bodies, THEN you will find that they work faster. I don't believe everything I read, but when I read it several different places, and one or more of them explains the "why", then I tend to have a little more faith in what I've read.

Additionally, to use these twice as heavy motors that cannot be found, and also to use the springs mentioned, requires using the regulators out of the 78 doors. The stud which retains the spring does not exist on our G-body regulators. ;)

This swap, whether it works for you or not, is not practical.
