OK, here's my take. I'm an ase master tech and I love my tr. but man it pisses me off!! When I break it it sits a while. My friends can't understand it but I work on cars all day and it's just not in me to constantly work on this pig!! I've really come to terms w/ it. 9second 6cyl duhh!! It's gonna break. Dave

Ohh, BTW, did I mention, Wish it sounded like the 12sec 71 vette!!!!!!!

I would say YES, but the biggest concern, at least in California is THEFT! So my strongest warning would be that leaving the car unattended is a huge risk!

My 86' GN was a daily driver and went 243,000 miles with no issues other than normal maintance. Turbo was replaced at 155,000 miles.

I think they are pretty reliable if left stock. My brother sold his daily driver GN with 240,000 miles. It was all stock except a Walbro, K&N filter and an old school ATR chip. Original motor, turbo, and trans. It only stranded him twice..when the fuel pump went out and the 02 took a crap on him. Now mine always needs some TLC but mine is far from stock...same with my dad's.

I think I would. The cars are really fun, and there isn't anything out there that can hang when it comes to the dollar/ET ratio. I have less than $1000 in mods on the Regal I mess with, and it went 12.1 @ 108 a month or so ago.

I would for sure! I've "influenced" at least 4 people to purchase TR's and they all love them! I think that for every person who dislikes their TR... there are 1,000's who love theirs. You could probably say the same for every car brand and I'm sure there are lemons in all brands but if you start with a relatively stock TR that runs decent and add upgrades... one upgrade at a time... you can never go wrong.

I daily drive mine and have ever since Jan of 1988. Out of that time it has had some problems but as things age, things wear out. I'm going on 50,000 miles on a mild re-build, 240,000 on the chasis. It was 180,000 before I ever cracked a valve cover gasket on it. These cars can be as dependable as the next car but they do have their quirks. The problem I think some people have is they don't know when to say when. Build a car to go 11's and detune it to run 12's and you don't have to worry about parts breakage. Build it for 11's and try to push it into the 10's and all bets are off. Of course trying to run a number is fine if that is what you want to do but beware if you walk on the edge sometimes you fall off.

That being said, would I recommend a GN to a friend? It depends on what his goals are. A nice cruise-in/show car?, yes. An occasional weekend brawler?, only if they don't mind turning wrenches and trying to learn what works, sure. A dedicated track car?, no. A daily driver?, would I recommend any 20 year old car as a daily driver? No. Mine is sort of different because I've grown into mine but it would not be fun to try to daily drive someone else's 20 year old nightmare.

To the op. You really did not say why you have not been able to drive it but it sounds almost like you are afraid to drive it. Things can be done to make these cars safer and more enjoyable to drive but it is not like these cars are "Unsafe At Any Speed". I still have a powermaster and it still works fine. Don't fix things that aren't broken and then complain that you are not getting to drive it. In other words, stop trying on gowns, take the belle to the ball and let her dance. If she stubs her toe then bandage it. If you can't bring yourself to get out on the floor then maybe you should recommend a GN to your friends. Your GN that is.

What's really the question here is the friend, not the car. I have friends who should own NOTHING but brand new, under warranty cars because they do good to remember to get their oil changed regularly. Those dudes should never ever be near a car like these.

Then I have friends who would take a turbo regal and turn it into a monster, and there's no way I'd recommend it to them! They'd kick my ass with their car in short time and that's no fun!

So no I wouldn't recommend one :) They'd either do no maintenance and ruin a good car or they'd make it faster than mine and either way, I'm not recommending one to either side of that fence

And I've had my car over a year, as my DD, and other than a cinched rubber gasket on my FPR that I was 100% at fault for, my car has not left me stranded yet, and that wasn't stranded it was pull into the liquor store, call the old lady "hey bring me that thing that is about the size of a jar of baby food sitting on top of my tool box, and my tool box" and replace that gasket and I was rocking.

I've had my car for 4 years. I've only put 7100 miles on it and it has been towed home too many times. The car is really fast, 500+whp and great fun when it's running. My car is down for what looks like a cam sensor failure right now, happened last night. I would only recommend this car to a real motorhead who understands hotrods break down alot. I love my car and would not trade for anything else, but it a POS most of the time.

I noticed the majority of the wouldn'ts have major mods done, except for 2 or 3. Those two are low milage and may have problems from sitting. I owned mine since 1990 and it sat from 97 - 07, only because the paint was cracking and my parents moved to NC from NJ and have a huge garage. I stayed in NJ and couldn't afford a garage until now, so I kept it down there. I have to say the only problems with the car were self induced by mods. With the exception of the powermaster, nothing went bad on this car that came from the factory except for what my Pitbullchip burnt up. I already recommended the car to some friends. It does depend on your objective. I would not recommend it to a kid just getting his or her license, because they would probably crash it. I was 18 when I got mine and am surprised now that I didn't kill myself or the car in it. But as for the car itself, I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with recommending them to a friend.

Probably not. They are huge money pits and nearly everything needs to be upgraded if you want to run big HP and do it safely. I guess that goes for any car tho...

I don't think a grand national is the type of car you recommend to someone. You have to know what it is, and do your research before even considering buying one.
If people like the style of it, I recommend a monte carlo to them.

Once you get a solid base these cars are just what I call, "A little finicky." Of course getting that base can cause you to pull a few hairs out, lol. I put 213,000 miles on my last one with no rebuild and nothing too too labor intensive.

I wouldn't recommend them to anyone that doesn't do their own wrenching though, I imagine that would break the bank quickly.

A few of my friends want them after riding in mine...

All of you bitching about having to work on them, it's part of the game.

Not sure if I'd recommend one or not. Maybe to someone that has good automotive experience, but not to someone just starting out. I think it's best to start with something much more simple such as a 64-68 Mustang 200 inline 6...for an ametuer.

But some of you seem to be complaining about how bad/junk your TR is, perhaps you should sell it and get yourself an 83-87 Monte Carlo SS?
