wow that really bites. He was a stand up guy! I loved his shows and so did millions of americans. He will be missed by many!

Hope his son picks up where his daddy left off, if he does his financial future is pretty much a lock!

Very sad. His wife is from Eugene, just north of me. They have two kids that are very young, and won't grow up with their dad. Not a good deal at all.

That's sad. According to another article I saw, stingray stings are very painful but rarely fatal. This one poked a hole in his heart in a case of "extrordinarily bad luck".

Very sad, indeed. I also just heard that his wife was on a hike in Tazmania (I believe), and she had not been told of her husband's death. I assume they have not been able to contact her yet. I pray for God's comfort for them. What a blow!

Very sad. When I heard the headlines I instantly thought a croc finally got him. But a stingray? It wasn't the poison that killed him, the barb of the stinger punctured his heart. Guess he probably went instantly.

My son is freaking out because we just went to an aquarium that lets you pet the stingrays. Of course they had their stinger removed.

Same here. I said he got bit. But wow never saw that one coming. Cant even get into the zoo's website to express my condolences to his wife.

Wow this is definitely shocking and very sad considering he is leaving behind his wife and young kids :( I always liked his shows and enjoyed watching his obvious love/enthusiasm for wild life!

He will be missed, but at least he went doing what he loved...

Thats sad but I knew it was going to happen. Who wrestles alligators and never loses? It is is ironic though how a stingray killed him. He had a some very young children too.

R.I.P. Steve Irwin

That guy was a real icon, you cant say 'CRIKEY!' anymore without saying it with an Aussie accent.

What are the odds of a stingray barb puncturing your heart? Ive never heard of a fatal stingray attack. Thats gotta be one in a billion... seems almost like some kind of destiny set out for him.

Hopefully it was'nt painfull. A local turbo Buick friend was recently out on a fishing trip and caught one. Well trying to be nice he got it on board the boat to unhook it and let it go and as he was stepping on the tail and taking the hook out it slipped out from under his foot and nailed him just about the ankle. He said he did'nt even know it got him till he looked down later and saw blood. He pulled the barb out still no pain.. about an hour later his ankle blew up like a baloon and he was in major pain. Had to go to the hospital for some shots. But he said he never knew it got him till his wife noticed the blood sometime later so hopefully Steve Irwin was in no pain and it was quick :(

I always thought he was going to get bit in half by a croc. That's terrible that such an avid lover and protector of wildlife gets taken out by the one thing in life he truly has a passion for (besides his family).

From what I understand he was out making a documentary on the barrier reef. Supposedly the weather wasn't good or the water was too cloudy to do the filming for the documentary so they were filming something for one of his shows about small fish of the reef. They were in shallower water when the ray swam by and snagged him. His crew loaded him up on the boat and went wide open to the port 30 miles from their location where there was a chopper waiting to air lift him to a hospital but when they arrived at the port he was already dead.

Very tragic. I liked his goofy personality and he always made me laugh.

Wow, i came to the lounge to post it and found this thread, i cant believe this really happened.
Man, this is very sad to hear, a celebrity, and leaving his wife and kids alone without him :( for the rest of their lives...

Makes me sick to my stomach.

Kinda reminds me of the Grizzly Bear guy that spent all his time documenting them in the wild getting real close to them and then the one bear ended up killing him as well as his girlfriend
