Looking to see if anyone has a field fix harness for sale for a 87 Grand National because I am having charging issues and hoping this will help? If you do have one please let me know how much. Thank you

Just order it from Caspers. Does your battery light come on? Bulb completes circuit. Caspers has a fix for that as well

They are out of stock on the field harness. I get no light on for the volts indicator. I opened cluster and seems like a weak contact. I swapped sockets around and still no luck. I get the light to come on but really dim compared to the others?

Check your connection at the back of the alt, the fusibile links on the starter and the battery as well.

Just fixed the same issue 2 weeks ago on my buddys car.
Ended replacing a deffective brand new alternator.

Yes that's what has me worried wondering if I did get a defective alternator. My stock 1 worked good until it heated up then my volts would drop to 10 maybe 11. I swapped it with a LT1 140amp and now I get 11 to 11.5 volts but that's when I noticed I got no light indicator coming on in the dash so took it apart and tested the socket and I do have power but not enough to make the actual light bulb bright like the rest that's where I'm stuck at so was thinking the field harness would bypass the light issue for now since I plan on swapping out my gauges in the near future anyway?

The car I worked on had no dash light. Bulb was good, was getting power, wire from dash to alternator was good. Try grounding the brown wire @ alternator, KOEO. Dash light should come on. If it's weak, could be a weak battery, bad/dirty dash contacts, or other wiring issue.

laws69cars, I have a new Casper's field fix kit that I'll sell to you. As far as I can tell it is brand new, never used. Note that the boost solenoid connector (the red one) is discolored. Best I can tell is that the injection molding machine had left over plastic of a different color in it.

It is $30 USD shipped via USPS Priority Mail (small flat rate to the lower 48). If you are located elsewhere PM/Conversation me for the actual shipping cost. Picture of the exact unit:

Can I ask how? Just out of curiosity because I like to learn new things?

Will make the list of parts.

Basically you will need a resistor, wires and some plugs.

If you look at the function of the VOLTS light , is to basically complete a circuit between the BAT and the field in the Alternator. The thing is that the field does NOT need a full 12v in order to activate and charge.
There are some GM models that have a small resistor in the dash connector right by the bulb. That resistor is to complete the circuit in case of bulb failure.

What you need to do is to complete the circuit near the alternator. You can use the same principle, install a bulb harness near the alternator (not pretty) or do what the field fix does, provide a lower voltage (from the wastegate solenoid) to the alternator field via a resistor (inside the black box)

Instead of the Casper field fix, you can use a diode, or 100 to 150 Ohm, 1 Watt resistor.

So, why people use the Casper kit.... basically is plug and play and cheap enough.

I got a casper kit for the same price that the parts I needed to DIY.

Oh I see it makes a lot more sense seeing the diagram that is for sure. Thank you very much for the help I'm going to pull the car out and give this is shot just to try it out.

I thought that I had posted the following in a thread that you also posted in about the low voltage. Just need to run a IGN+ switched wire to the F terminal of the alternator connector. The PNK/BLK wire at the EGR solenoid is an easy place to pick up the IGN+.

Do this, unplug the alternator connector (not the stud), and check the markings on it. The larger end will have S (sense), then F (field), the L (lamp), then P (?). Go to the junkyard and look for a connector that has the L & F terminals with wires. Wire into your car.

This is exactly what the field fix kit does, only easier as no soldering required.
