if i have almost a full tank of gas will 1 gallon of xylene help bring my octane up at all?
do i have to use anything else other than pouring in xylene to my tank?
will xylene hurt anythingh in my engine?
i just want to be safe with my car.
thanx

xylene is perfectly fine for your motor...in fact it actually helps it by cleaning out the deposits just like fuel injector cleaners do...only better

the general rule of mixing in xylene is for every 3 gallons of 93 octane you should add 1 gallon of xylene...this equates to about 100 octane i believe if i am correct...

XYLENE

One gallon of xylene mixed with 3 gallons of 93 octane equals (approx.) 100 octane. Adding Xylene should not harm your engine, but it's probably best for you and your paint job to avoid prolonged contact.

(Lots of discussion available on this topic instantly by putting XYLENE in the SEARCH feature. One post even tells how to get it wholesale at certain paint stores.)

HTH :)

When using xylen it is also good to use a few oz. of marvel mystery oil, it helps lubricate, because xylene is very dry. You can get Marvel Mystery oil in almost any auto store, and one gallon of xylene to 3 gallons of 93 is a nice mixture but anymore would be pushing it. Xylene is 117 octane so depending on how much your mixing it with you can use the chart in the fuel section of gnttype.org to figure out what your octane is.

marvel mystery oil

is marvel msytery oil added into the gas tank at the same time you are adding the xylene?

Yes, only a few oz. though(to a full tank that is). You dont need much. It mixes in with the gas.

my car is completely stock except for the atr regulator and ramchargers boost controller. i am trying to run maybe 17 or 18 psi above a 5000' elevation here in colorado springs.
what type of xylene mix should i sue to obtain this?

Yes you add the Marvel Mystery Oil to the tank at the same time as the xylene & you only need ~1/2 ounce of MMO per gallon of booster added. This replenishes the lubes normally found in pump gas which are being diluted by the addition of the xylene.

A 1 : 3 mix of xylene / pump gas nets you a 99 octane final blend & I usually make my homebrew in 12 gallon batches, (3 gallons xylene + 9 gallons pump gas + 1 1/2 ~ 2 ounces of MMO.) The "formula" for determining the octane level of homebrew blends is:

(octane level of booster * gallons of booster) + (octane of pump gas * gallons of pump gas) / total number of gallons = octane of blend

xylene = 117 octane
toluene = 114 octane

Adding a gallon of xylene to a nearly full tank of gas won't do much for the octane level (0.5 ~1 octane number) but it is a good way to help clean the fuel system and combustion chamber. I recommend doing this once every year or 10,000 miles & be sure to change the fuel filter at the same time! ESPECIALLY if this is the first time your adding the "cleaner"... the xylene will free up all kinds of goop (old varnished gas deposits, impurities build up, etc...) from the fuel tank!!!

I'd STRONGLY recommend upgrading the fuel system with a Walbro 340 pump, hotwire kit to boost the voltage to the pump and a fuel pressure guage that can be seen while at WOT before you start messing with the boost settings!!! The ATR regulator is a start but you REALLY need to replace the anemic stock fuel pump and wiring as they were barely adequate for a bone stock car back when these cars were new!

1 gallon xylene to 3 gallons 93 is the most xylene I would use. You should get a scan tool to be sure you dont hurt that motor, and know exactly what you need to run that boost without knock. But I wouldnt use more than 1 to 3.

dconner,
