Xylene questions...

Hey Guys,

I bought a gallon of Xylene tonight in anticipation of the last test and tune of the season at the local dragstrip. Before I mix it with my gas can you guys tell me what kind of octane increase I can expect? I know it will depend on the amount of fuel, but what octane is Xylene? I'm running a 93 chip so I'm needing a lot of octane. Just enough to run knock free w/ 17lbs boost.

You need to mix xylene in a 30% mixture to get the most out of it.If you add 1 gallon to 1/2 tank of gas it will not do much good.If you have a Poston's catalog it shows the formula to figure octane.I believe xylene is 117 octane a gallon.Bruce

Compute your total octane by:
Total Octane = (((#gallons of pump gas) X (octane of pump gas)) + (#gallons xylene X 117)) / ((#gallons of pump gas) + (#gallons xylene))


For 99 octane, mix 1 gallon of xylene for every 3 gallons of 93 octane pump gas.
With this mix I can usually run about 19-20# of boost with no detonation with a 93 street chip.

Okay, thanks guys! BTW, will this harm my catalytic converter? Good to know Xylene is 117 octane. What do you guys usually pay per gallon? It's about 10 bucks a gallon here. My ingredents on my can say 100% plue Xylene. Is there a kind that I shouldn't buy? Thanks!

Make sure to add about 4oz of Marvel Mystery Oil or similar lube as Xylene does not have any lubricate in it.

In my area before I started to run straight race gas I could buy 5 gallons at a Sherwin Williams pait store for 27.00.I also found that 2 cycle oil for boat engines worked very well for lubrication.I mixed 2 ounces for every gallon of xylene.This oil lubricates very well and is made to burn so it is a win win oil to use.Bruce

2 ounces of top cylinder lube (2 cycle oil, MMO, or whatever) per gallon of booster is WAY too much guys!!!! That is 2 stroke engine gas-oil mix territory & will foul the plugs in pretty short order.

I use 2 ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil PER 12 gallon batch of xylene home brew: 3 gallons xylene + 9 gallons pump gas. Been messing with this stuff for years & through both real world AND lab testing I've found this is the blend that gives the most return for the investment.

Thanks for the help guys. I was just trying it out tonight and I added a gallon of X to about half a tank of ~97 octane. (that was the mix from last weekend)

I was impressed. My car ran a personal best of 8.69 i@ 80.3 in the 1/8 tonight. That's with a totally stock setup except with what I have listed. No knock except for when I let off the gas. I think it's time for that Walbro fuel pump.

I ran xylene for 2 years with a 2 ounces of oil to a gallon of xylene.I am saying to mix 2 ounces with the gallon of xylene only,not the gas.I never fouled a lug.I checked my plugs often for color and thee was never a sign of detonation.Do not forget,by the time you add the gas you are down to less than an ounce of oil per gallon.With a street chip (94 octane)I ws able to run 19 pounds of boost with zero knock.This was without alcohol which I did not have then.I don't run alcohol or xylene anymore now,just straight 110 race gas.Bruce
