    Larger u-joints

Not exactly true ...yoke will work if driveshaft is cut to proper length when you install a 1350 yoke on tube....or barrell of slip yoke can be cut with a hacksaw to the 3 5/8 if you install it on stock driveshaft using a conversion u joint, but this kind of defeats the the bigger -is- better...

    Driveshaft too short?

There is a joke in here somewhere .....:D

    Driveshaft too short?

Its on the ragged edge,so to speak , of being too short.A late GM 4L60E yoke is about 2" longer and will fit splines and u joint. I have them new for $70 if you can't find a used one local

What gear oil should I use

Only the lack of oil will"ruin" your diff. High performance gear oil has some friction modifier in it...which is slicker than regular oil and makes the clutches slip without chatter. Use any name brand 80w90 HP rated gear oil. Chatter means the clutches and doing their job, but if it bothers...

    whats your oil pressure?

Don't get your hopes up.I found a NOS GM ft cover and done the oil pump rebuild/clearance mod from a really good(and humorous) post on this site.I used a new Melling HV oil pump and a shim kit from one of our preferred vendors here. I was able to change from 15W40 Delo (5-8psi hot idle) to 10W40...

Proper method of charging air conditioning system

I'm sure there is a reason that this is not recommended...so chime in ! I usually shoot liquid into a vacuumed system, engine off, from a drum until it equalizes.Wait 10 min or more until liquid has time to boil off into gas then start and check pressures....usually a little to top it off after...

Everyone Please Read! Policy Notice On TB!

I personally have no problem with a requirement to pay membership dues to be able to post on this board , and maybe restrict certain areas to members only ;and lessen the load on the vendors. They are all valuable assets to maintaining these female(high maintenance) cars and times are tough. It...

vibration in rear at 55mph and up

Your description suggests driveshaft balance problem as previously mentioned, but check u joint fit in rear yoke first...if u joint not centered in yoke or if you failed to install c clip on cap ,u joint will not stay centered in yoke and cause this problem

    Aluminum driveshaft - Cut Down

3660 and 10 sec is dishing out plenty of punishment with any kind of tire. Watch your aluminum shaft yokes at the rings around the u joint for fatigue.

    Aluminum driveshaft - Cut Down

I had set up an aluminum shaft for a race only camaro and he could not keep it in the car for more than a few passes.I never actually seen him run ,maybe his technique needed improving, but we went back to steel and no more problems

    Aluminum driveshaft - Cut Down

It will cost approx. $200 to cut and balance aluminum but unless it is a lot larger -4" tube or bigger-it may not be strong enough for the torque. The reason the OEMs used aluminum was the longer lengths without a center support bearing but tube size jumper to 6" on the longer shafts with thin...

    t-top stuck

Is it locked ? My trunk key fits the t-top lock.....or ..its been on so long the rubber is stuck to it.Real care required or you will be repacing $300 worth of weatherstrip.

    Which Rear end?

Put the cover and look it over ....clutches may be worn out ...and you can check gear ratio.Count the teeth on both gears and divide the little number into the big number. 3.42 seemed to work best in these cars unless they were highly modified.

    Detroit lockers

Just to stir the pot a little more...ARB makes a air powered locker to fit but it does require a compressor or bottle to keep it locked.Best of both worlds, street friendly, locked up to race. And FYI ,Eaton does not show a soft locker app for the 8.5 in my catalog.

    Detroit lockers

I think Eaton bought Dyneer(who was the Detroit Locker parent co.) about 3 years ago.And yes ,Eaton shows a Elocker for the 8.5#19659-1,and is 30 spline but it requires different bearings than factory(LM102911-49)
