Im finally getting my new transmission on Saturday wich means I can start doing som serious tuning. I have a G-tech that gives me 0-60, 1/4 mile and HP #'s. No 1/8 mile though. My friend told me that 1/8th mile was better for tuning because there is less wear on the engine. Since my g-tech doesnt give 1/8 mile, can I use the 0-60 time or the HP #'s as a reliable tuning method? If I watch the KR, will it be OK to run 1/4 mile for tuning?
Also, while Im on the subject. I have the afpr, adj. waistgate, and I know how to adj. the TPS and IAC. What is the best way to tune my car?
1)Baseline run
2)turn up boost
3)Make a run and check for knock and check 02's (whats the ideal o2's?)
4) If knock... turn up FP?

I have never seriously tuned my car because of anoying trans flares so Im not sure what the best way is to tune it.

Thanks

Hopefully you have a Scanmaster.
Limit your boost to 17lbs. with 93 octane gas.
I was told to try and keep O 2s at 800 to 825 a little on the rich side but I'm just being a little safe.
Set fuel pressure at 43lbs line off and go from there.
You can't cure all knock problems by cranking up the FP
Tarey D.

So is 0-60 times or HP numbers reliable ways to tune my car? I dont want to do lots of 1/4 mile runs if they work as well as 0-60 times or G-tech HP numbers?

Thanks

0-60 may not help that much because a lot of that is based on how well you launch the car. Just tune by boost, 02, fp and knock. Get in 3rd gear, floor it look at o2s and boost and see if you are getting any knock. If it doesn't knock turn the boost up a pound. Do the same thing until you get knock and then back the boost down a little. Shoot for less than 3* of knock and high 700s to 800 in 3rd gear and you should be fine.

Ryan, 0-60 is a good starting point to test/tune with. You won't beat the snot out of the car and you'll have a good reference.
Important factor is to be consistant in your "launches". I would do all soft launches at first (no brake torque, just stomp on the pedal)...adjust things and watch for better or worse 0-60 times.
A good tune is the sum of all things working together correctly/effeciently. Once you start having traction issues, we'll take it to the track.
Make small changes, one at a time and keep a note book on each adjustment and the result there of. (you'll never remember)
Intially, leave your boost at 15-16...adjust only the fuel pressure +/- and see what differences it makes (in 0-60 time as well as O2 knock, etc...) WATCH GOING TO LEAN UNDER HEAVY BOOST THOUGH...that's the only danger you will have. other than that, have fun and learn.

Did you get the new chip yet?

In reality the car needs to be tuned in 3rd - under full load.

1st and 2nd just don't load the car hard enough to get it sorted out.

My new transmisson is working great! Mark told me to keep a light foot for around 500 miles to brake in the trans so I'm going to have to put another 300 miles on it untill I can do some serious tuning. It should be fun to REALY see what my car can do!

Thanks,

If you do alot of in town driving, you can reduce that number of miles a bunch.
Trans needs to shift alot through all gears, that's what he's going for with the break in.

I was trying to point out that 0-60 is a good starting point...not that it would be best...especially for a STREET CAR.
not everyone drives their car a 1/4 mile at a time...
for now a 0-60 will work good then, when he can get to the track, he can do the 1/4 mile tune (3RD GEAR).

FP and a tuneup?/

2 things I see as being a possible problem w/ the 0-60 tuning.
1. The ALDL based scanner won't get much data. The refresh rate is toooo slo. Direct Scan is much faster, but has it's drawbacks too.
2. Tuning w/ FP is effective only if the lock patch is in the chip. Otherwise, the O2 attempts to correct back to stioch, and the added fuel is then taken back out.
Also, I'd be careful starting at a boost level as high as 17psi w/ pump gas..

My $.02 worth... Back under my GN:D :D
Damn! Why do I have to spend so much time there, just to drive it on the weekends???

Thanks for your info. Ill problably use 0-60 to get a good innitial tune and then go for 3rd gear tunning to get it perfect.

I've been waiting for my new chips for about five weeks now. Hopefully they will be here soon so I can tune my car. Right now I have a mystory chip which makes tuning difficult.

Thanks all
