im having a problem with 1-2 shift... even driving normal... it just happend all of the sudden on the way home i went WOT and it would not shift out of 1st... rpms went all the way to 6k.... and then even driving normal it will not shift out until i ride out for a bit in first....

any ideas?... checked fluid level.. fluid was full, smelled normal, color was good. tried reseting the TV cable.. didnt do anything...

thanks,
John

sounds like it threw the governor spring to me, if not its a sticking shift valve or stuck TV boost valve.

Thanks for the reply. Hopefully will be able to drop the pan tomorrow after checking the TV cable/external stuff. I know where the governor is, but have no idea what it should look like underneath the cover... :frown:

Take the 4 bolts off and it will come right out with the cover, piece of cake. Check the spring, check balls, shaft seal at the bottom and make sure the weights move freely. Make sure to blow out the cover incase of debris. If the spring came out, a set screw works mint holding it in place. Just tap the hole (small weight) and install with loctite.

Before you drop the pan floor the pedal about 10 times in a row with the motor off, might be something stuck in the TV valve! Happened to me once, I put a rad in my Monte SS then the car wouldn't shift at all untill I move the TV a few times to loosen the junk cought in it!

I found and fixed the problem... it threw the governor spring.... which I had hoped... since governor pressure has to overcome TV pressure to cause an upshift... and vice versa..

Thats great! Glad you got it figured out, and thank you so much for posting back the results to help a brother out! ;)

I was not as lucky. 2nd gear band was baked, as well as the rest of the clutches and steels. Time for a total rebuild with all the good stuff.

Can someone tell me about this set screw idea, were to get one and exactly how to fix it, like tapping?...

Thanks, Dan

You simple use a screw in the small governer weight. Just tap the hole thats already in the end of the weight. Not sure what thread i used. I will check and post it later but it didnt require drilling prior to tapping  . Then loc-tite the new screw in place with permanent loc-tite. It will up shift a little sooner with the added weight of the screw. You can use a gram scale to remove the added weight if you wish. The screw will prevent the light spring from flying out. Make sure it doesnt interfere with any other part of the governor causing the ball checks to be permanently unseated.
