Some good may come out of this.

I think twice before going anywhere now and I'm sure others feel the same way. More people will start taking public transportation and bicycles to go to work and run around. I can't help but wonder if the real reason for the outrageous oil prices might be just an effort to get the average person to stop driving as much which would be better for the enviroment. One of the perks of my job is I get to ride the train and bus for free, so Im thinking I might start taking the bus to work and back. Im sure I would see a huge difference in spending in just 2 weeks. The only bad thing is during the winter that quickly becomes a real bad idea. So heres the big question, what really is the reason that a barrel of oil is $120.00? At this rate I might take a big home equity loan, buy a very large amount of gas, and store it for 3 or 4 months til it goes to $10.00 a gallon. Then I can sell it for $8.00 a gallon, pay off the loan and pocket a killing! Black market gasoline suppliers will be the new thing.

I have already been working on my next project,,a Walbro 340 with a 5ft hose on each end and a cigeratte lighter adapter on it ,,gonna go to the car dealer late at night .....

The real reason is no conspiracy, it's simple economics. Oil companies are businesses and there is a *sweet spot* for pricing things that gives you the most profit. Price something too high, demand decreases to a point where you make less money than if you charged less, price too low and demand doesn't cover the costs of production.

So any business can make a given profit either at the high end of the price scale or the low end. Their goal is to find the point in the curve where profits are the greatest. They are doing pretty well at this, oil companies have been posting insanely high record earnings.

Eventually demand is going to slacken and the high point in the profits curve will move to the left and they will lower their prices accordingly.

Unfortunately, demand is going to remain pretty high and is going to keep growing especially with countries like China improving its living standards.

OPEC also does the same thing by artificially increasing scarcity by dictating how much oil gets produced.

There's pretty much an energy oligopoly and thats why the market needs competition in the form of alternative fuels.

We can reduce our demand on oil but that doesn't change the fact that the oil cabal can essentially dictate pricing at will.

If they are forced to seriously compete with Ethanol (which would require an enormous jump in production, hopefully cellulosic can do this) for instance, I think prices will start to be governed by natural market forces as opposed to artificial influences like cutting oil production simply to drive prices higher.

You've got it backwards. The only reason ethanol can compete is that it is subsidized by the govt.

Oh, and it takes more energy to produce a gallon of ethanol than is contained in the ethanol. Not to mention that it is an environmental disaster.

Correct. Plus, prices will come down once the FED decides enough is enough and strengthens the dollar. Look at all commodities, they are up even further percentage-wise versus oil.

The answer is not ethanol. We cannot grow enough raw material to make it a serious contender to oil and still be able to support our daily needs for the raw product.

I didn't make any claim as to whether or not ethanol can currently compete, or if it has a negative or positive energy balance. That's a completely different subject.

Re read what I said.

Regardless, it has been thoroughly proven that ethanol has a positive energy balance. Do some research, the topic has been beaten to death. The Pimentel model for ethanol negative energy balance uses very old data.

Furthermore, the concept of energy balance isn't really important, by many estimates gasoline itself contains less energy than it takes to produce. What it does do is take energy from many different and hard to use forms and converts it into a condensed, transportable, easy to use, and convenient form. That's what makes it so valuable.

I think basic elementary reading comprehension was the only thing required to conclude that ethanol cannot currently compete with gasoline. This is why I mentioned cellulosic ethanol. It's coming. Google it. It's in our best interest to support it. Gasoline has had over 100 years to build up an infrastructure, refine and streamline production, and get a complete stranglehold on the market.
Ethanol, especially cellulosic is going to need time and investment to catch up. When you look at it in this context, what ethanol has already done in just a few years is nothing short of amazing. Just imagine what 20 years worth of investment in research and increases in production efficiency will do if its come this far this quickly.

I don't understand how the gov't regulates your gas/electric bill, phone bill, cable bill but something that mostly everyone such as gas/diesel/fuel oil the gov't does nothing about.....hmmmmm $$$$$.

Got to remember that the tobacco, auto manufacturers, pharmacuetical and oil companies run the country. The auto manufacturers are losing ground. All these companies have strong lobbists in the gov't.
