How fast are you guys going with the original 8.5 10bolt rear? What 60ft times are people pulling with the 10bolt? ..At what point does a 12bolt (or 9'') become necassary?

Alot of things will break before you break the GM 10 bolt 8.5" rearend , the ring gear is only 3/8" smaller than the 12 bolt and the pinion shaft is the same. It's the 8.2" thats junk.

Cal Hartline ran the mid 8s with his 8.5 so it can be done.
We going really fast you need to weld the axel tubes, run a spool, install c clip eliminators or 9inch bearing ends are even better.
Of course get the highest count axles yous can. When I was looking into this a while ago that was 33 spline.

However If I was building a a car with low 9 second power or faster I would probably do the 9 inch for the larger gear ratio selection, modular construction and of course higher strength.
Of course you also get additional weight and parasitic drag as well...

if you stay away from axle hop and a trans break the 8.5 is fairly stout

I have had the 7.5 from the 83 earlier cars hold to high 10s in a full weight body.

its all about how the axle is kept under control... if its loose under power... its gonna blow.

I am, by the way, refering to a 10bolt with upgraded 30 spline axles/carrier. I'm under the impression 30spline axles/carrier are a dirrect replacement for the stock 28spline stuff. I plan on using strange 9'' ends. A trans brake is NOT in the near future, but u never know.

So who has replaced there 28spline carrier/axles with 30spline carrier? do the carrier bearings need to be a special size?

Hi,
I would imagine that the 8.5 will last longer than a lot of your other drivetrain components, like the trans and driveshaft. I personally have beat mine to death, but it takes a lickin', still keeps tickin', so to speak.

That's what I wanted to here! I have a Dynotech built trans, with billet input shaft, and I was looking into a Strange 3'' chromoly shaft with 1350 u-joints/yoke.
