I have a bone stock motor with bone stock heads and I lose some power on the top end from the stock valve springs floating. I see many people on the boards that have new 100# valve springs, but what worries me are these soft camshafts.

Is it worth getting the valve springs to remedy valve float or is it not worth the risk of wiping a lope on these damn camshafts?

Thanks in advance.

They are not a risk and needed if you want to rev over 4800 and make any power. The cams are not soft. They are like any other cams that have been used in any ohv engine over the last 50 years. The oils today suck and Buick engineers didnt locate the #3 exhaust in its ideal position and is prone to cuase early cam failure in some instances. There are additives that have plenty of zinc that will help with cam life.

Thanks for the info guys. So can I replace these with the heads on the car? I really would like to do it without tearing my heads off if possible.
If so, how much is the tool and where I can I get / borrow one?

Thank you.

I've had the #100 lb. valve springs on my GN for about 12 years with not one problem.

Valve Spring Replacement

I had mine done about 20K ago, and the spring pressures were too high. That, and not using the ZDDP additive wiped my cam. Be careful out there...

Kirban Performance(215-766-1611) used to sell the tool for spring removal with the engine installed. You might try calling and asking about Part #6745. I didn't see it in their on-line catalog. They do have a ZDDP additive though(https://secure.mysuperpageshosting.com/kirbanperformance.com/index1.htm) I've got the Comp Cams #980's in my engine, and they work great. Yeah- The worst thing about our engines is that pesky lifter bore being out of position, and not letting the cam turn the lifter like it should. Mine was running on 5 cylinders for a while and I didn't know it.

Gary, I have the tool you need to change them on the car. Give me a call bro. ;)

Who can I order them through?[/QUOTE said:
The best price(and fastest shipping) that I've found on the Comp Cams stuff is through Summit Racing. They don't list must Buick stuff in their catalogs, but have(or can get) most anything you need. I ordered engine bearings from them a few weeks back. None in stock, but they were drop-shipped by Clevite and received within three days of the time I placed my order.

I have a set of 100# springs with maybe 100 miles on them I'll sell you for cheap and I can loan you the tool. I also have the locks and retainers for them. I live in the west burbs about 15 min from Chicago give me a call if interested.

Comp 980's. I think they are 94lb.

Comp 979's are a bit softer than the 980's, and a teeny bit stouter than the stockers.... best spring for stock replacement if your even the slightest bit worried about wiping the cam....

Just in case someone wanted to see them.

turbojd I noticed that you are running lt1 valve springs. Is that a more cost effective way to get stiffer valve springs? Just wondering for those us who are on a stricter budget... Like me lol :D . Also would you guys suggest changing my springs? They have 77k on em. Thanks
