I just purchased one of these for my car and had the speedo shop set the miles to exactly what is on the car currently as opposed to leaving it at zero. I figured I would have the original one with the miles at the time I switched over, as well as the new 145 speedo in the car that starts counting from the actual miles on the car during the switchover. Did I do the right thing, or would it have been better to leave the new one at zero??

Also, any advice on removing the original cluster? Would be nice to have some insight before going at it. The car is an 87 GN so it is floor shift with tilt on the column. Thanks

I personally would take a picture of the original odometer reading, and the new 145 odometer reading zero, and just keep it if you decide to sell. Disconnect the speedo cable at the split under the hood, near the master cylinder The plastic dash bezel basically pops off, but remove it carefully and evenly. Once it is off, you can see the fasteners for the cluster... pretty straight forward, then remove the cable, the wiring harness, and any hardwired connectors.

You might find it easier to disconnect the cable at the head since you have to be right there to disconnect the VSS. It is a simple clip and will save messing with the cable.

kirban 2 cents worth

send me a pm denniskirban@yahoo.com with your name & address will send you actual directions from start to finish....unless you can figure it out from above.

Personally I am not very mechanically inclined but the toughest part is backing the small 5 or 6mm vss screw off your unit in the car and not loosing that screw.

I would set the odometer for what is currently on your car given a choice....no idea whose 145 unit you have but if calibrated correctly it will be fairly accurate until you drift over 100 mph....its hard to stay accurate cramming that many numbers into that same 0-85 space...

Besides not many people will volunteer to ride with you at speeds of 120 plus....
that air you feel rushing at that speed is the back end lifting of the roadway...

Anyhow, I got the directions I give with each of my units so its no big deal to send them to you....complete with illustrations....

On a side note: The 1986-1987 Yugo which hit our shores had a speedo in it that read 100 mph.....unlike our Buick which read to 85 mph.....weird huh?
