hi. i just recently bought a monte carlo with buicks 3.8 v6 turbo in it. i have fixed many things in it. and now i am stuck. i need some help.

there is a 4bbl carburetor installed on it. and right now its only running on 2bbl. its missing parts. i think this could be the cause of my high idle in park. its been timed, and tuned up, having problems with it. is there a rebuild kit i could get for it?

car could be for sale to for the right price. would rather fix and drive though. from AZ no rust. body in mint condition. besides paint and needs new vinyl top. needs headliner. other than that body in good condition.

Welcome aboard. This is normally a before black question so you might want to visit us there. On the left side of the carb you'll find an angular section sticking out from the carb. A number is stamped on it. Take that number to a parts store and they should be able to cross refference it to get you the kit and float. What parts do you think are missing?

Make sure the choke is open ALL the way; and the Pull-Offs are working. If not; they lock the secondary side closed.

there has to be something big. like an addition to the choke or somthing. cause there is just a lever that moves to the other 2bbls. and that could be all it is. a 2bbl choke on a 4 bbl carb. idk what not very smart person would do that. but when i rev it up enough the turbo sucks it down anyways. but it would still runs better and everything.

I'll give you a little better info so you can understand the carb better. The back plates aren't a "choke". They're operated by vac. The pull off on the pass side is the timing for the back top plates. It keeps vac on them until you go WOT and then slowly open the top plates. This way you don't get to much air and bog the engine down. If the lever from the top rear and pull off are missing you'll need to go to a junk yard or maybe get lucky on evilbay and get a second one for parts.

The back plates are an air-valve; that also controls the secondary enrichment system (rods and jets). Charlie’s right; if the secondary pull-off (seems like some of them only had a primary) is ruptured, missing; or the rod is gone; it won’t work correctly.

They won’t open without the car being under load (in gear and moving). You’ll never get enough air moving through there at rest for the air valve to open.

You’re also dealing with a 26 year old carburetor. It has probably been worn out for the last 22 years.

....

when i got the car it was a mess. i finally got some time off today. so i work on it and NONE of the pressure lines are connected to anything. well they connected to the carb. but after that????????? kinda pisses me off. but after playing with it for 3 hours i got the idle down i had to block off 4 lines. and am thinking about blocking off 4 more. and taking the stupid black can out its just restrictions anyways. alot of kentucky rigging in this rigg right now. thinking about just dropping my 702 hp 454 in it for a while. and havving some fun. but i think i got it takin care of. i might have to rebiuld the carb. not for sure yet.

next step. brakes.

Please join us in the before black section and look at the sticky at the top. Click on the link to get an education on the car so you have a better idea of what you're doing. The link goes to Rich George's site about these cars and it has a great deal of info for you.

Not a problem. I'll be starting a thread on mods to the early non CCC carbs as soon as I get the time to take the one I have apart. All I need right now is the Turbo control center to go without the puter. If I can get one at a reasonable price I'll be tearing it apart so maybe we can make it, or at least fix the ones that aren't working. This way we can keep the cars alive for the next generation.
