Good article.
Saw one the other day in PRESTINE condition! Sweet ride!
The guy did not have the hood open so I had to look at the turbo set-up online.

Thought these things would have a substantially higher rating though.

They break easy and run like crap is what I heard.I like it too though either way and would snap one up in a minute and put a LC2 in it if I had the chance.Has the right rear, disc brakes all around and handles great and has that killer interior.I just picked up a very nice 78' firebird w/buick v6 stock 1 female owner 70k mile fully papered, cream puff for 900 bucks and gave it to the wife to drive.Needless to say I'm on her good side lately. Someday that car will make a nice sleeper with a slightly better Buick V6 ;)

Those cars were bad azz,(looking and handling) but couldnt get out of there own way... My buddy had one that we pulled the turbo motor out of and threw a 400 in just to spice it up a bit

Typical comments from the "small block mentality" crowd. Those turbos were hard charging cars when they were new. Lets see what else had 210HP back then? Vette-NO!, Z/28-NO! Trans Am NA-NO! Yep the turbo TA was the domestic horsepower champ for 1980-1981. I had a 76 455 TA back when I was a senior in HS and if I had to replace it I wouldn't want my TA with anything other than a Pontiac under the hood. Lets see what the other TA engine selection was back in 80-81. Yep, Chevy and Olds. A properly tuned carb turbo could hold its own on the streets.

Here is a bit of trivia for those of you who weren't of driving age back in the disco era. Chevrolet considered putting the 301T in the Z/28. It was nixed at the last minute as the guys in marketing thought no one would buy a Z/28 unless it had a SBC under the hood. I have to agree on that decision. I also have an old paper parts book from late 1979 that has the part numbers for a special turbo hood and all of the different colors of decals that say "turbo" for it. I've never seen a picture of what this car was supposed to look like but I believe it was also a bulge hood very simular to the TTA. One book I have says it was the 80-81 style "air induction" hood with the bulge moved over to clear the turbo. And it also was to have the "turbine" style wheels used on a lot of Camaro concept cars of that era. If you ever saw a picture of the 80 "Ultra Z" you get the idea.

A 1981 Citation X11 was only three tenths slower in the quarter mile than the 1981 TTA. It wasn't much of a year for bragging rights.

I still would rather have a sbc z-28 than a 301 t (if u are lookin for 1/4 mile perf)..... U couldnt make them move(the 80 tta)....I had a 79 pace car (403)and that car couldnt move either but i wound give my right nut to have that car back.........there are a few cars I always wanted to have back...... 1 was a turbo buick (got back last summer) the second was a 79 TA pace car (im workin on it) Along with a few others :D

Now this is a good thread  I love the old early turbo GM's even tho they were slow as hell. They don't get the respect they deserve.
